The former Conservative MP and political commentator Matthew Paris recently published an article in the SPECTATOR not merely advocating the legalisation of euthanasia, but declaring that it will indeed lead to the sick and elderly experiencing pressure to have themselves killed to save money - Mr Paris thinks this would be a good thing. For good measure, he adds that opponents of legalisation are secretly inspired by belief in God, whom he apparently considers to be a disreputable foreign homophobe who should have no influence on British public policy. A fine illustration of the saying "Better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a pig satisfied". www.conservativewoman.co.uk/yes-death-is-inevitable-but-killing-to-save-money-is-not/I think Matthew Parris is a kite-flyer in general. What I would say is that he would have some excuse for this if we didn't have the data we already have from Canada and the Low Countries. But he is ignoring accumulating evidence.

There is another phenomenon, worth mentioning, and that is the pandemic of loneliness. Seems that the current generation is less likely to get married. But aside from economic reasons and the scars of the COVID lockdown, it appears young men are identifying as conservatives and young women as liberals and an atmosphere of "Ne'er the twain shall meet" has sprung up. I've heard this observation before, but probably given that today is Valentine's Day in addition to being Ash Wednesday, it is coming up in many media outlets.
I think there is a pending crisis in marriage and family life.

More responses to Matthew Parris's view that there should be a duty to kill yourself rather than cost the public money: unherd.com/newsroom/assisted-dying-advocates-are-losing-their-compassion/thecritic.co.uk/matthew-parris-and-the-illusion-of-independence/Here's an interesting little detail. The TV series BREAKING BAD is (to simplify matters) about a chemistry teacher in the Southwestern US who turns to making illicit drugs when he is diagnosed with terminal cancer, has no health insurance and is faced with the prospect that his family will be utterly impoverished. At the time, there was a joke that the Canadian version of the series [Canada has universal state-funded healthcare) would be: "Mr X, you have cancer. Your treatment begins immediately". End of series. Now there's a new version of the Joke, in which the Canadian response is : "Have you considered MAID?" [Medical Assistance in Dying, i.e. assisted suicide.]

The wikipedia entry below describes a recently released horror film in which a nun is forcibly impregnated with a clone of Jesus by Vatican scientists seeking to bring about the Second Coming; the plot incorporates a not so thinly-disguised pro-abortion feminist subtext. Don't read the plot summary unless you have a strong stomach, and note that this is some people's idea of popular entertainment: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immaculate_(2024_film)
