There has to be a good reason why evangelicals in the west of Ireland are named Burke. They seem to have done well academically, but not socially.

I think it's safe to say that there are ways and means to do certain things and though the Burkes may be frequently right in principal, they are more likely to alienate people with their conduct. That is a lengthy Wikipedia article for a family who are not really that significant at this point in time. Even the Youth Defence Mac Mathúna/de Faoite family don't have an entry like that.

No doubt you are aware of the case of Enoch Burke, a teacher who was suspended from his position as a teacher in Wilson's Hospital, Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath (diocesan school of the Church of Ireland/Anglican diocese of Meath and Kildare). The problem began when Mr Burke refused to follow a direction to refer to a pupil of his as "they/them", as the pupil identified as transgender and was in the process of transitioning. Whereas I agree totally with Mr Burke's position and I think the suspension was incorrect and unjust, Mr Burke certainly didn't help himself by interrupting a service and haranguing the principal. He was injuncted from attending the school, but when he defied the injunction, he was imprisoned for contempt of court (this is one of the sanctions attached to an injunction, which is in the area known as equity). I gather the Burke family has a history of this. They are home-schooled evangelicals from Co Mayo. Nothing wrong with their principals, but the way they go about asserting them can be problematic I see Wilson's Hospital has appointed a new principal now, who is already singing from the hymnsheet of so-called inclusivity.

Cremation raises some of the same issues, which is why Orthodox Jews and many Evangelical Protestants are opposed to it in principle, as Catholics were until recently. To be fair, there are circumstances under which cremation may be necessary/desirable, but the relaxation of the prohibition seems to me a fairly characteristic post-Vatican II example of ignoring the deeper symbolism.

When Tommy Tiernan mocked the Crucifixion on television, the Great and Good rallied to his defence. When he mocks taxi drivers (I don't know in what context) he gets sponsorship pulled and apologises profusely for giving offence.

I'm surprised Tommy Tiernan wasn't cancelled outright years ago when he ranted against the Jews - calling them Christ killers among other things.

thecritic.co.uk/the-prison-of-silence/This article discusses the problems involved in keeping three female impersonators in Limerick women's prison (they're in solitary confinement, which increases the strain on the remaining cells which are already overcrowded). The remarks about how the mainstream media have decided these problems are not worth discussing and matters have been left to bureaucracy and silence reminds me of what they say about (non) coverage of certain social problems in the bad old days when few dared antagonise the bishop.

Nothing to see here: move along. Despite the fact it goes beyond anything Orwell or Huxley foresaw. But the question I have to ask is if anybody in the media can see the reaction of future generations in the light of this absurdity.
