Hello! My apologisies if this thread sounds to you like spam. It is not by no means my intention, and I hope you can understand my reasons. If you have ever left your native parish, you know how hard it can be to settle in a new place and find your best catholic environment possible. I will be moving to Dublin next summer to take a Msc degree in the Dublin Institute of Techonology (Dublin 1), from Lisbon, Portugal. I know little about Dublin and its people. My priority will be my studies and my vocation discernment. I wonder if you know any welcoming place to visit and a flat where I can share it with others catholic fellows? Thanks very much. ;D Mario

Hard to say, Mario. A lot of list members go to the Latin Extraordinary Form Mass in St Kevin's in Harrington St, which is Dublin 8. You are in Dublin 1 which is north city centre; Dublin 8 is south city centre, but a bit of a hike. I don't know so much about Dublin 1 - but you could have a talk with either Father Bernard McGuckian SJ in St Francis Xavier in Gardiner St (Jesuit) or Father John Harris OP in St Saviour's, Dominick St (Dominican) - either would be good with advice. The Jesuit church, though, promotes a Gospel choir and the Dominican church is very ugly. I suppose the best liturgy in Dublin 1 is the 11 am ordinary form Latin in the Pro-Cathedral on Marlborough St. Nevertheless, some inner city churches have strong communities, though a lot of the people who live there are from the poorer classes. I am nearly sure there is Mass in Portugese somewhere in Dublin, which is probably directed more at Brazillians that live here than Portugese - but they probably have that information at the Pro-Cathedral or at the Dominicans or Jesuits. There should be a chaplain in the DIT you will be studying in which should also have that information. Another Dublin 1 church worth calling into is St Joseph's, Berkeley Road which is Discalced Carmelite, which is probably better than the others - I don't know any priests there though at present. I was in Lisbon some time ago and found it an experience. The cathedral is beautiful. I can recall the ruins of the Carmelite Church and the Dominican Church which is not completely rebuilt - relics of the 1760 earthquake. I think a couple of Portugese related straws appeared in the Brandsma Review ( www.brandsmareview.ie but they wouldn't be in the archive) at the time. But I did the other, more typical tourist things in Lisbon too. While in Portugal, I also did the Algarve and Fatima (and some of the spectacular castles in northern Portugal - Tomar, Alcobaca etc). Hope you enjoy Dublin as much.

Thanks Alaisdir Ua Séaghdha! I'm glad I caught your attention and that you related with my situation. You're very kind to send me so rich and detailed information. I will surely follow your recommendations and look for accomodation among the Jesuits and Dominicans and also reach the chaplain in my university. Let's keep in touch.
