Am I correct in stating that the media's coverage of World Youth Day was bizarre. An event headed by an important religious leader which attracted 2 million people was surely worthy of more news commentary. By contrast, when Richard Dawkins comes to Ireland to address " three men & a dog ", he's all over RTE. Very strange. Yet we can expect the usual saturated/ puerile coverage of the Raphoe report because it shows the Church in a bad light. Even stranger. Thankfully EWTN's coverage was first class. Thank God for the Astra satellite.

I wish now that I had satellite TV but unfortunately I had to make do with RTE's higlighting of the protests against the Pope so I knew little of the huge turnout for the celebration.

Thats a pity loughcrew. To reiterate the EWTN coverage was fantastic. You should get free to view sat tv installed. It's relatively cheap. I rarely watch RTE now. For example during the Popes UK visit, EWTN was great as was Sky, & surprisingly the BBC was journalistically quite balanced/good ; anything was good compared to RTE's journalistically unprofessional/agenda driven juvenalia. RTE News/Current Affairs ensures that the spirit of Pravda is still very much alive & well in D.4. BBC 4 had an excellent docu. last year about the contribution of Irish monks to western civilisation ; & Mark Dowd had a very positive docu. on BBC 2 about Pope Benedict. Mary Kenny has said that ironically the appointment of a Muslim head of religious affairs to BBC has led to a much fairer treatment of Catholicism.

When the Pope visited England it was like two different worlds; the BBC had nothing but hundreds of thousands demonstrating against him and Sky barely muttered boo about the demos, it was all about the Pope's success. I rarely watch RTE but I've found TV3 to be particularly anti Catholic, they're like the Channel 4 of Irish tv with their schedule and ethos. Blech.

TV3 is a COMMERCIAL network which belongs for 50 % I guess to ITV in England.

The fact that a commercial station was showing such hostility to the Church is pretty worrying, because they tend not to do anything which might antagonise viewers/advertisers. (Mary Whitehouse in the 1960s found that ITV - for this reason - was more receptive to her complaints than the BBC, which saw itself as having a mission to enlighten and had its licence fee to rely on). The implication is that they see hostility to the Church as something which appeals to viewers, at least the kind of viewers they want to attract.

Never watch his shows, but I think one of the much heralded TV3 Autumn Shows is to be hosted by Vincent Browne & titled - " Challenging God ". How pathetic/ juvenile can you get. You could'nt make it up !.
