Shock/horror - RTE Radio News Headlines reports factually on the Popes visit to Madrid. The Headlines stated - " Pope Attracts 1.5 Million Supporters to Madrid ". I jest. RTE's actual headline was - " anti-Papal protests continue in Madrid ". Say's it all about the journalistic standards of our friend's in Donnybrook !.

They are just copying the IRISH TIMES and the GUARDIAN which have been making the protests the centrepiece of their reports on the Pope's visit for the last week or so, and I hear US media have been doing the same thing. Recall that all media see their reports in terms of an implicit narrative. The liberal media have as the implicit narrative into which they fit their reports "Catholic Church in Decline: Millions who once were suckers leave the pews as reactionary and superstitious organisation exposed in all its corruptions by the clear light of modernity" rather than, say "Despite Age and Frailty, Pope Heroically Struggles to Bring the Gospel to a New Generation and a Continent in Decay".

There is a good article on RTE's hostile coverage of World Youth Day on the back-page column of this week's IRISH CATHOLIC - I think by Andrew O'Connell.
