Did anyone notice how RTE News got all excited over describing the recent carnage in Norway aas the work of a " fundamentalist Christian ". In plain English, of course this translates as a Protestant extremist. It was subsequently revealed that he had Masonic links. So, RTE more accurately should have reported - Masonic/Protestant Causes Carnage in Norway. Cant see them reading that out in Donnybrook, can you ?.

I mentioned this elsewhere on the Catholic forum versus atheist.ie thread. To be fair, it seems pretty clear that his Masonic links derived from his lunacy rather than vice versa - that sort of person is always looking for secret knowledge because it makes them feel important, a bit like Bishop Williamson. It is also entirely clear that the man was not a Christian believer at all - he wanted to revive cultural Christianity as a bulwark of western civilisation, but he says this does not require personal faith. Apparently he says he wants to revive the mediaeval church (part of his Templar shtick) and at one point he says that he intends to use a prostitute shortly before beginning his 'mission' because he thinks the amount of grace he will acquire by his holy war will more than offset the sin involved. That sort of mindset is not Christian - certainly not Protestant; it appears to be (a) a copycat/parody of the Islamist view that "martyrdom" in the jihad wipes out all your sins (b) entirely opposed to the classical Lutheran/Protestant belief that you can't win salvation by good works. What seems to have happened is that in adopting his parody version of mediaeval Catholic Christendom he has unwittingly assumed that the Protestant misunderstanding of Catholic teaching on grace and good works is in fact an accurate representation of Catholicism (as if someone were to join the Church while still believing that Catholics buy absolution, and begin his first Confession by asking the priest "how much?"

Yes, I take your points. But I was really just using the story to highlight RTE's bizarre reportage/use of loaded/inaccurate descriptions. If the guy had been a Catholic, rather than a Protestant ( & I'm not having a go at Protestants - hope I'm covering every angle ) I bet RTE news would'nt have used the Fundamentalist Christian description ; they would have went straight for the jugular.

Yes indeed, they use the term "fundamentalist" very vaguely and without regard for its meaning.
