Pray for the people of France, who have fallen victim to merciless Jihadist savages. May God have mercy on them, and bring down the people who would cause further harm. Amen.

Sinead O'Connor could probably do with our prayers at this time. She seems to be in a very dark place and the media spotlight on her hasn't helped.

The writings of Dr Anthony Daniels (alias Theodore Dalrymple) will be known to many of you. While there are issues on which we would differ profoundly (e.g. he is strongly in favour of contraception and legalised abortion, he is an atheist - though he has been denounced by fellow atheists for criticising the "new atheist" view that religion has only negative consequences and is destructively irrational - and the extent to which he has his tongue in cheek should not be underestimated) he has been courageous enough to point out some of the social wreckage he has observed from the breakdown of the Christian ethic (particularly in sexual matters) and the dissemination of the view that life has no transcendent meaning. In a recent article - see below - he tells us that he is suffering from health problems - particularly osteoarthritis of the hands - and is increasingly conscious of his own mortality. We should pray that he may be preserved from despair. www.newenglishreview.org/Theodore_Dalrymple/And_Death_Shall_Have_Its_Dominion/

Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Dominic Greer, a regular attendee at St KEvin's Harrington Street, who has died. HE kept coming to Mass almost up to the end despite old age and debility. (Pray also for the friends who gave him lifts.)
14I said to him, "My lord, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15"For this reason, they are before the throne of God; and they serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. 16"They will hunger no longer, nor thirst anymore; nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any heat;…

Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Mother Angelica, foundress of EWTN, who has died. Raymond Arroyo's biography of her (even allowing for hagiographic tendencies) shows her as a very formidable customer. Incidentally, her vocation derived from admiration for a local priest in her Midwestern home city who stood up to Mafia extortion and got murdered.

Your prayers are also requested for the repose of the soul of Dr Jennifer O'Reilly, former lecturer in mediaeval art and iconography, who has died. Many years ago I took one of her honours courses, and while at the time I found it somewhat startling to realise how many visual features of religious art derive from mediaeval scriptural exegesis (rather than being "transparent" reflections of the biblical text) as I have developed an interest in spirituality in recent years I have learned to appreciate the depth of the church's reflection throughout the centuries as a resource on which we can all draw and as exemplifying Newman's point on the development of doctrine. Dr O'Reilly herself had a strong personal spiritual commitment (whether Catholic or Church of IReland I am not sure). I remember seeing a poster a couple of years ago for a lecture she was giving or had given to a Carmelite group on art as a resource for prayer, and wondering whether one day I might run into her again. Alas, not in this world.
