I wonder, out loud, if the Cardinal has more to fear from some of his brother bishops than other adversaries.

Prayers are always good. I wonder who is behind the profile of Cardinal Brady in the current Phoenix which claims everyone in Kilmore must have known what Fr. Brendan Smyth was up to, and that Cardinal Brady was not a mare notetaker but a significant high-flyer who was already en route to promotion and who therefore can be held to have had a greater responsibility than he claims. There are a copuple of sneers at what are described as the "country and western wing of the bishops" as opposed to Archbishop Martin and his allies.

Many observers believe John Cooney is the Phoenix'es Clerical Errors consultant.

Many observers believe John Cooney is the Phoenix'es Clerical Errors consultant. I suspected either Killala Father Kevin Hegarty or Father Brendan Hoban, but Cooney seems more likely. The championing of Diarmuid Martin is a clue to this. But some of the stuff in the profile (his distant relatives on Cavan Co Co, for example) seem a propos of nothing.

The "country and western" sneer certainly sounds like Cooney, as do some other stylistic elements (the sneer at the bishops as an old boys'club built around arcane irrelevancies, the contempt for Roman-formed clergy etc etc.
