I never heard about this cartoon until I learnt it was nominated for an Oscar (t) for Best Animation. It lost against Up from Pixar. However, the little buzz surrounding it made me curious. Then I discovered the trailer.... An Irish-French production ! Looks gorgeous and the subject is interesting from a catholic point of view... So you see lads, when the frogs and the paddies work together... what a result !

It seems an interesting cartoon but from a Catholic point of view a bit dubious, for the following reasons (which I acquired from reviews/interviews as I have not actually seen it): (1) Although the central character is a monk his beliefs play little part in the story and we are never actually told that the Book of Kells is in fact a copy of the four Gospels. (2) A major role is played in the story by a sort of Celtic nature spirit who appears in human and other forms (3) one of the authors of the near-catastrophe is the Abbot of Kells, who is presented as believing he can safeguard his monastery by building a great wall around it to shut out the outside world. While that sort of mindset is generally mistaken IMHO it could be read amongst other things as a critique of orthodox beliefs in doctrinal purity. I am not saying this film is evil or people shouldn't see it - by all accounts it is a very ingenious piece of the cartooist's art - but don't expect more than it has to give.
