Hello everybody,
I'm a french catholic woman and I don't speak english very well. Please apologise if I commit mistakes.
I really like Ireland, and I can imagine how hard is the life when you are catholic in this beautiful country. I pray for you for that. But never forget that being catholic is hard wherever you live, even in a catholic monastery.
Last year I saw a film, I don't remember the tittle "the wind rises" or something like that.
I am honored to write this little message on an irish forum. I won't be able to understand all you say, but be sure I will pray for you.
Cecile

accueillez l'ami...........
Please forgive guillaume as he really hates athiests dispite the teachings of Jesus Christ to the contrary. It also appears from his above post that he dislikes the moderator Michael G also.
The reason we are here is that we were invited.
However guillaume is uncomfortable with his particular brand of Catholicism being challanged by intelligent people who ask thought provking questions.
You will find we make reasonable arguements and are open to discussion on all topics.
I urge you to review some of the posts in which we contribute.
May your god be good to you.

Guillaume, With all due respect, don't you think it is pretty sneaky of you to criticise Michael as moderator as being extremely poor? and to do so publicly and to a new member- please learn some prudence!!!! and also apologise..some of us here do in fact speak french you know? Thank you for your responses. I am able to understand myself. I make a difference between atheists who are searching the thruth, because I'm sure if they really and honestly search the truth, they will discover God because God is truth, their's no way else.
Often atheists are afraid in front of God because of imagination. When I was young I saw a film named star trek and one member of the equipage (the japanese) had hallucinations. He was seeing knives, or arrows, thrown on him. The captain Kirk compeled him to keep navigate despite thoses hallucinations.
For atheists, the way to the truth is like that film : the brain often say "beware ! be careful ! those catholic people are dangerous ! God is bad."
But God is not bad, God is the Liberator. He gives freedom. Mostly by suffering for a moment, sometime without suffering, but He gives freedom. Intelligente and science are pleasant, they help to find freedom, but their are not enough. The science can serve freedom, or murder.
The Liberator is above.
It's hard to speak with words when I do not know how the words resonate in your mind. In a different country, with another way of mind, and with a different language it's more delicat.
I you beleive that freedom and truth are manifested in the history of mankind, then you believe in God.
Guillaume I'm glad you know leforumcatholique. I wrote on that forum many years ago.
Thank you all for your welcome.

Cecile, once again welcome.
Just a couple of points..........
Most of the Athiests in Ireland are ex-catholics and are well aware of the bible, god, jesus et al and all the stories associated with the aforementioned.
In fact I still read the bible from time to time when Im looking up quotes to back up my arguments. Its a very interesting book. However, it was written by bronze age men and contains nothing within it that would not have been known by bronze age socities.... no mention of electricity, DNA, the sun being the centre of our solar system etc....... if it was written by a god or gods surely these things would have been documented.
In fact it contains many scientific falshoods and hundreds od contradictions.
In this way its no different to other books from this period of human history.
By the way, we dont fear people of faith, catholic or otherwise. I was one for many years.
All I will state is that there has never been any evidence put in front of me by anyone that proves to me there is any gods of any description.
I think you may have the wrong impression of Athiests. We love our famalies and friends and most of the good things in life. We just refuse to accept, without evidence, that there is an invisible entity responsible for all of this.
And on a final note..... you are an athiest too!!!! I presume you dont believe in Thor, Baal, Apollo, Zeus etc?
Well I am the same. I just believe in one less god than you do. There is as much evidence (or lack of it) for the gods mentioned above as the god of the monotheistic religions.

There is as much evidence (or lack of it) for the gods mentioned above as the god of the monotheistic religions. First, there is no GodS, with an S, as told you numerous times. Speaking of God in plural is against the basic logic and reason, as God Is, by definition, only One. Second, telling that Cecile is an atheist because she does not believe in Thor or Zeus is indeed irrelevant. Those two lads, are pure mythological inventions who belong to a Disney cartoon. Only the Holy Trinity is God. An atheist is a person who refuse to believe in God. As Cecile is a Christian, she believes in Christ, so in God. So she is not an atheist. Simple basic logic than a 10 years old child would admit, except an atheist. You are looking for a "visible" entity ! You are looking for God, like some are looking for ET and spaceship for other space. God is pure Spirit and it is in your mind that you will find it if you search it.

First, there is no GodS, with an S, as told you numerous times. Speaking of God in plural is against the basic logic and reason, as God Is, by definition, only One. How is it against basic logic and reason to pluralize the term god? Are you claiming that Hindus who have several deities are illogical? It also goes to the point that the Trinity is illogical if there is only one god. Why should your god be any different than Thor? There is as much evidence for Thor as there is for your god..... that is practically none! And I say that your god is a mythological invention on the same level as Thor et al...... to say different is just special pleading. Cecile can believe what she wants to and so can you. That’s your decision but it doesn’t make it right or the truth just because you say so. To quote Anatole France "If 50 million people believe a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing."I’m sorry..... but when it comes to Thor she and you are atheists. You refuse to accept the existence of that god. You just claim you have a god that is better than Thor and therefore when it comes to any other gods but the one that was indoctrinated into you as a small child, you are an atheist. Don’t be so inward looking. Its not all about your religion. There are others out there too that you don’t subscribe to. To these people you are an athiest. You are looking for a "visible" entity ! You are looking for God, like some are looking for ET and spaceship for other space. God is pure Spirit and it is in your mind that you will find it if you search it. How do you suggest I look for him? I don’t think I can prove your gods existence in my mind. What an odd suggestion. How can one find your god or even show one iota of evidence that’s not spiritual or in the mind. Bring something to the table that suggests that only your god could have done this thing. Anything at all! I don’t believe that ETs (as you bring the subject up) have visited this planet either, but sometimes I do wonder. There are some very strange people out there with very odd belief systems.

Where is the problem, then for you, as, for you, Jesus, our Lord, does not exist. It is easy for you to quote the Lord against me, while you do not believe in his Existence. I never stated that Jesus didn’t exist. Now you are just misquoting me to suit yourself. That’s dishonest my friend and beneath you. I would accept that there was a wandering preacher that walked the sand of Judea around the early first century and that he must have had an influence in the region to become noticed enough that the Romans saw fit to crucify him. With this I have very little problem. However, I don’t accept the miracles ascribed to this man such as walking on water, healing the leapers and the blind, the virgin birth or raising from the dead at all. I am of the opinion these things were added later by early Christians such as Matthew and Luke to raise Jesus' status and try and gain new followers. Gods such as Horus, Attis, Chrishna, Hindoo, Thammuz, Iao, Hesus, Quirinus and many other ancient gods all were crucified, lay in a tomb for three days and were resurrected on the third day. Many of the above were wandering preachers who preformed miracles, healed the sick and were born of a virgin birth. The all have the same attributes as Jesus......... These stories were rampant at the time of the first century about many gods. Even Justin Martyr, the early Christian apologist, states that what he claimed about the miracles of Jesus was no different than the miracles that pagans claimed for their gods. The only difference is Justin claimed he was right and the pagans were wrong. Thats it! Nothing else. It should also be noted that the earliest Christian writings are Paul’s letters and he never mentions one single miracle save the resurrection. Paul is unaware of the virgin birth, walking on water, healing the sick, raising from the dead etc. Even Mark (who wrote the earliest gospel) and John don’t mention the virgin birth. All these things seem to have been added later on by Christians that came after Paul to beef up the Jesus story and make him more attractive to new converts. But once again I would state for the record that a man called Jesus did existat one time here on earth and your anger towards people who dont have the same beliefs as you goes against what is commonly believed to be the teachings of this man.

Seems crazy to me that a thread begining with an introduction could turn into a scrap between list members.
Come off it. Leave Cecile alone.

Bit of an over reaction? Whos attacking Cecile?
I think you'll find guillaume attacked the athiests presence on this site.
I welcomed her to the site and guillaume reacted in his usual way.

I am not saying Hemmingway is to blame. I don't like the way Guillaume slipped the message to Cecile in French - most of us have done some French in school and understood it. In particular, it was a cheap shot at Michael G.
The only criticism I have of Hemmingway is reacting in such a way to involve Cecile in a scrap as she is just starting off on the forum, but I accept that he was doing just that - reacting in this case to provocation from Guillaume.
Pardon me if I talk in the third person, but I think it necessary to say who I am criticising and for what.
