Please consider signing this yourself; and if you agree with it, pass it on to others to encouraging them to sign. The focus on Bishop Williamson's opinions in media coverage of the lifting of the SSPX excommunications is being used to undermine the Pope. There are many in the Church who would like to see him weakened. www.soutienabenoitxvi.orgClick on the English language tab (the British flag) to see the page in English.

When I clicked on the link my computer froze and I had to turn it off and restart it. It should be checked to make sure nothing is wrong.

I also nearly suffered from the link. Can you check you have it right MG?
Also, you are a little vauge here as to what it is you are protesting against. It is a rather short message you have made with very little content. Is it, for example:
1) The media coverage 2) The bishops comments 3) The lifting of the SSPX excommunications 4) something else 5) some combination of the above
that you have a problem with and on what grounds?

My apologies about the link. I simply posted a message as I received it from a regular correspondent. I'll ask him to check it out. I found that by going to the main site, www.soutienabenoitxvi.org, and clicking on the English language tab (the British flag), I was able to open the page without difficulty. Hazelireland, as I think you will have seen from other threads, none of us here have any time for Bishop Williamson whom I at least regard as a toxic crank with poisonous views who brings shame on the Church. The petition has more to do with internal tensions within the Church. The lifting of the excommunications on the bishops was a pre-condition that the Society of St Pius X had set for starting discussions with Rome about a reconciliation. (As Alasdair has said elsewhere, they and their priests remain suspended.) Many on the liberal wing of the Church are opposed to the idea of a reconciliation and are also unhappy with other things the Pope has said and done like reaffirming the right of Catholics to hear the Tridentine Mass. Williamson's ravings have given them a useful stick to beat the Pope with. The "support the Pope" petition is an attempt to counter that. It most certainly implies no endorsement of Williamson or his views.

There is also a petition, I found, to support Bp Williamson. But I reserve the right to publish it.....

I spoke too soon. "None of us" isn't correct, to judge by Sceilg's latest post. I see the Vatican has now told Williamson to withdraw his statements. It will be interesting to see how he responds to being back under the authority of Rome.

Well, It is obvious that the Pope is attacked regarding the lifting of the excommunication of Bp Williamson. The Media, who have little clue about what it is all about, are assimilating the Decree and the fact that the Pope is "welcoming" a negationist. The Fact that the Pope is german doesn't help either. The Pope and the Vatican made things really clear regarding this unfortunate issue. The Pope now need support from all Catholics. Unfortunately, even within the Church, it is not happening. See here : www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/4512451/Cardinal-condemns-Pope-over-lifting-of-excommunication-on-Holocaust-denier.html. We are in a strange situation indeed ! Hopefully, it will stop pretty soon ! God Bless, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY Hibernicus !

The Pope is under fire. In France, French medias and French Politics criticized the last words of the Pope regarding use of condoms to prevent AIDS. The Pope said that condoms were not only the final solution, so to speak, but also would spread the disease even more. The sinner's world is spitting his venom. However, the Pope says nothing new. His predecessor, JP2, of happy memory, didn't say something different. And JP2 beneficed of great "love" and respect from the world. I call JP2 something the "pope star" ;D Benedict the XVI is only doing his job... The spread the Good News and teach and remind the teaching of the Church regarding morality, in particular our relations to each others. I write this to remind you to sign the petition. God Bless !

On a flight to Yaoundé in Cameroon, his first trip as pope to Africa, home of two-thirds of the world's AIDS sufferers, Pope Benedict XVI really did say that AIDS is a "drama that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which on the contrary increase the problem."The statement has been condemned by health officials worldwide. Preventing sexual transmission of the virus is crucial to preventing a vast acceleration of the AIDS pandemic. Scientists know condoms stop the virus being transmitted because they've made observations, from monitoring couples to watching whole countries like Thailand and Brazil slow the epidemic with condoms. So on what basis is Benedict speaking? Doctrinal consistency. The Catholic Church believes that people must have sex only with their spouses, with no contraceptives, to leave open the chance of procreation. Besides, contraceptives encourage sex outside wedlock by minimising its consequences. So they have to insist that more condoms leads to more illicit sex and more AIDS. Such medieval thinking is completely detached from the real world. If that was how human sexuality really happened, HIV would indeed never have got far. But like his predecessors - one of whom claimed that condoms had holes in that let HIV through - he is in a bind. His job is not to tell the scientific truth. It is to uphold doctrine. But let us be clear. When the pope says condoms make AIDS worse, he doesn't have access to secret facts. He's just staying true to a well-known, if somewhat tortuous party line. The scientific facts say otherwise. Condoms stop HIV.He probably means well. The pope went on, "in front of pain or violence, poverty or hunger, corruption or the abuse of power, a Christian cannot remain silent." Well, neither can a scientist. Distribution of condoms encourage directly and indirectly sexual relationships. Usage of condoms is mostly linked to sexual intercourses outside marriage. In this way, the Pope cannot approve it. The condom is not 100 % efficient regarding prevention of the spread of the disease and the contamination (risk of breakages, slips, improper application, etc...). As you said, in a continent ravaged by this disease, the most prudent way to avoid contamination is abstinence.

Human nature drives the desire for sex not condoms. Otherwise we wouldn’t be here. The Vatican’s obsession with abstinence is just celibates projecting their own problems onto everybody else. It's a case of being in denial gone nuclear. Where condoms are used the cases of disease and unwanted pregnancy go down. I don't know, but this sounds a very secular position and even atheist.

I don't know, but this sounds a very secular position and even atheist. You make the above statement and give the impression that having an opinion that complies with an Atheist or a Secularist position is somehow a bad, suspicious or even a wrong position to take. How odd............. Not everyone will share your unique brand of Catholicism guillaume.

Hemingway,
You wrote: "Not everyone will share your unique brand of Catholicism guillaume. "
Remember this Board is for Irish Catholics, hence atheist or secularist positions are suspect.
