There is a belief among many trads that weak contemplative monasteries are being suppressed, sometimes when they could be saved (e.g. by bringing in nuns from other congregations) through a combination of theologians who promote the view that contemplative life is obsolete and church authorities who covet the assets. The incident linked above will not discourage this view. BTW I note one of the expelled nuns is Indian.

The point, I believe, is that the document Cor Orans sets the bar too high for many convents to survive. We would be seeing more convents permanantly closing anyway, but Cor Orans ensure there are more.

If accurate, the Pope has brought a curse down on himself. Hectoring these nuns about obedience while treating the Jesuit Rupnik with kid gloves is disproportionate in the extreme

The same disproportion is visible in a lot of church authority figures, by no means all on the same side in internal disputes.

There are updates on this, but the Vatican is backing up a high handed bishop on very flimsy evidence:https://www.pillarcatholic.com/p/sex-money-and-cloistered-nuns-the

I suspect that there is more to this on both sides than we have been told, but it seems odd that the Bishop should be given a retrospective blank cheque for his actions to date while the nuns' appeal is in progress. He's being made judge in his own case. Here is an account more sympathetic to the bishop (and I know the site has its own angle on events) wherepeteris.com/texas-carmelite-nun-saga-latest-developments/ It does seem odd BTW that a prioress with such serious and ongoing health problems has not resigned. There must be significant governance problems.
