If you ever had a bucket of cold water thrown into your face, this piece by Larry Chapp is the metaphorical equivalent. Scary.

This seems a good place to solicit reactions to the Synod. I think the hierarchy delegated too much to the organisers, who largely got the answers they wanted. In relation to faith formation, there is clearly ignorance of the faith out there, but how much theological formation is there to draw people further away from it? Larry Chapp makes a point about gnostic genitalism in his article, but the Anglican convert Gavin Ashenden says something similar here: Gavin Ashenden Crisis in a less polemical tone.

So who participated in the so-called Synodal Way and what were your experiences?

So who participated in the so-called Synodal Way and what were your experiences? I attended one small meeting of people at a local church. There was no set agenda just a few general open questions about what would be good for the future church. There was a note-taker and the conversation went along the normal lines for these types of meetings, including ideas on getting young people involved in the church etc. I did expect there to be a follow up which might have given a summary of the results from the diocese, but I didn't hear anything else. I must admit that I sat at the meeting dreading the possibility of hearing a phrase such as the 'Church must be more inclusive' or something similar. Thankfully that didn't happen.

I also participated, albeit only for one session as I had Covid at the time of the second session. I'm in the Merrion Road parish in Dublin. We broke into groups and spoke about what nourishes us in the Church, what causes us sorrow (or something), that kind of thing. It was like a spiritual SWOT analysis. I had the same experience as Assisi-- it was all very reasonable and moderate-- except for one young French woman, who despite calling herself a "theology nerd" came out with the usual liberal laundry list. It was obvious nobody agreed with her. But there were only about six people in the group. We all put up post-it notes on a whiteboard with our ideas, but I don't remember much of what was on the post-its.

I could say much the same as the two men above. And it probably reflects most people's experience. So where did the stuff in the synthesis come from?

I know I'm being lazy, but this post might belong in this thread too:
