I see Cork and Ross priest Tom Canon Deenihan has just been made Bishop of Meath. The new nuncio appears to be following recent precedent.

Just at present - Dromore is vacant; Ardagh & Clonmacnois is vacant; Ossory is vacant. I am unaware of any auxiliaries in Dublin (Armagh has one). Some of the last appointments are far from inspiring - I am thinking of Kilmore and Achonry. Where do we go from here?

There is a major shortage of candidates for the episcopacy among the active priests today. It would be difficult to see men like Tom Deenihan, Gerard Nash, Paul Dempsey or Martin Hayes getting advancement if there were better candidates available.

Well, I remember reading a suggestion by George Weigel, maybe the time of the Apostolic Visitation initiated by Pope Benedict, that Ireland should look to the US for bishops. I'm not sure if there were any there. However, when Charles Brown was the Nuncio in Ireland, there was some flicker of hope. But he had forces against him: I am thinking of the Archbishop of Dublin of the day who hardly made an impact.

It was certainly short-sighted to move Archbishop Browne from Ireland and the then Archbishop of Dublin's fingerprints are all over the transfer. Archbishop Browne went to Albania, but after Archbishop Martin was definitively passed over for the red hat, Archbishop Browne was moved to the Phillipines, which is one of the biggest Catholic countries in the world.
However, though there is not much material for the episcopate among Ireland's priests, some of the recent appointments are frightful.

Ossory has been filled by Father Niall Coll, a Raphoe priest who spent most of his working life in Belfast after two years without a bishop. Ardagh and Clonmacnois was vacant for as long at least. It seems priests in Ireland are refusing offers of promotion - that's at least what I am hearing.

I wonder might Dromore be merged with Down & Connor? Newry is a big town and it might be awkward to run it from Belfast. Perhaps it might be better to emulate the Church of Ireland - have Connor independent and merge Down & Dromore

Perhaps it might be better to emulate the Church of Ireland - have Connor independent and merge Down & Dromore At the moment Archbishop Éamon Martin is apostolic administrator of the Dromore Diocese, which suggests it might be linked with Armagh rather than Down & Connor. Armagh has more territory, but the population of Down & Connor is bigger. On the other hand, Armagh is also the only diocese in Ireland I am aware of with an auxiliary bishop. There used to be six auxiliaries in Dublin and two in Down & Connor and I can recall one each in Cork & Ross, Derry and Armagh.

I have heard of other instances of Protestant clergymen concelebrating at Catholic Masses - but I am not going to say this publicly now.

The episcopal ordination of the Bishop-elect of Plymouth has been indefinitely suspended in a very weird move. There are four precedents in recent years of appointments that have not progressed further, for various reasons.
It seems it is very difficult to find bishops these days. I despair of some of the more recent appointments in Ireland where I think the problem is not so much the selection process as the dearth of candidates available.

Any thoughts about the new Bishop of Down & Connor (transferred from Raphoe)?

I would regard that as a good appointment, though I hope Mgr McGuckian's successor in Raphoe is good.
