Douglas Murray comments on the set-up job against Roger Scruton by a left-wing journalist, discussed above, and also mentions various other recent cases: www.spectator.co.uk/2019/04/the-scruton-tapes-an-anatomy-of-a-modern-hit-job/People sometimes claim that political correctness is just a form of good manners, or courtesy. I profoundly disagree with this view because a lapse in courtesy rarely has the catastrophic personal consequences that an offence against political correctness does. There are rarely Twitter storms and social media witch-hunts against somebody for a moment of discourtesy. Indeed, it seems to me that the world today is considerably ruder than the world of fifty years ago, though it might be more polite than the world of two hundred years ago, before the Victorian softening of manners. PC doesn't seem to have made us any nicer in general. Sir Roger Scruton is a very well-established and canny individual. His life was not going to be ruined by being removed from an unpaid advisory position. But he is an exception.

Oh, this is pretty well-known. Sometimes it backfires - I remember some years ago a Traveller rights group closed down when its government funding was withdrawn after it suggested that a particular government measure was racist. This illustrates a problem with "civil society" groups which rely on state funding, when one definition of civil society is precisely that it's independent of government. It also suggests that to some extent such groups act as sockpuppets, whose criticism is tolerated by the government because it can be cited by the government to justify doing on the basis of "popular opinion" what the government wants to do anyway.

Seems to be approaching Rod Dreher's Benedict Option from a different direction.

Quite right - Dreher's Benedict Option is about creating nuclei of a counterculture.

This is serious territory. There have been two arrests in Britain of dubious legality of people who stepped on the toes of those behind Mermaids.

The trans lobby is an immensely powerful, vindictive and dangerous. They present themselves as totally caring individuals, and many of them see themselves as such. They care so much for confused teenagers, that they don't care who they are destroying. They failed in the case of J.K.Rowling, but they succeeded with Graham Linehan. As I said previously, I probably don't agree with Linehan about any important issue and I didn't like Father Ted, but that's not the point. There is an issue with free speech here, Linehan exercised it in a thoroughly legitimate manner and a lobby set out to destroy him. I gather Rick Gervais and the US Comedian Bill Maher were at the receiving end of vitriolic campaigns. All these named individuals are squarely in the liberal camp. At the same time, the commentator Caroline Farrow (who with her husband who is a priest are converts to Catholicism) was arrested in a humiliating manner on a dubious charge subsequently dropped, without regard to her rights as a citizen or due process. I understand that the Gardaí have made threats in similar circumstances here but are not known to have carried it out yet. There are a myriad of issues here, but I will say there is a lot of money involved in the transitioning industry. Surgery, medication and counselling don't come cheap. We already had the Tavistock clinic in Britain closed down after a lot of trouble (these operations are irreversible), but the HSE attempted to destroy doctors' reputations who questioned the ease with which young people were referred there. This seemed to come from the political establishment, see here: gript.ie/rtes-deafening-silence-on-irish-children-being-sent-to-unsafe-tavistock/ Likewise, it seems that teenagers encounter apparent peers in internet chat rooms that push them towards transitioning, but some of these are adults posing as kids. There is a lot going on here and no one seems to be in a position to say stop.

Linehan gave Norton a big break by having him on Father Ted but Norton has never had a word of support for Linehan as Linehan's career has been effectively cancelled (his Father Ted musical was to be Linehan's 'pension' but the companies that were to produce the musical withdrew because of his stance on women's rights). I think that the Trans lobby and movement are so powerful as it represents a dry run or opening shot for the idea of transhumanism further down the line - the idea that humanity can be changed and augmented (and controlled) especially using new technologies.

There is a lot going on here and no one seems to be in a position to say stop. There is a TV series in America following Jazz Jennings, a biological boy that has 'transitioned' to a girl/woman. In the episode below she has post-op visit to the Doctor/Consultant. (S)he has now shot up in weight to 234 pounds (approaching 17 stone). Much may be due to the drugs being used as well as general unhappiness. Its all quite staged and sycophantic, God only knows what state this person will be in further down the line. Lo and behold, her consultant is an Irish woman Sidhbh Gallagher (appearing at about 2 min 20 secs. into the video). www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbuqtgaCqi0
