Another grim piece of news for the Church in Poland to digest. The late Cardinal Henryk Gulbinowicz, who died today, was seen as a hero of the Solidarity movement, but in recent years he has been revealed to have been an informant for the secret police, and 10 days ago he was subjected to canonical penalties over accusations of sexual abuse. Better the truth be known than seek refuge in unfounded fantasies, but this will hurt so many. Lord, have mercy. cruxnow.com/church-in-europe/2020/11/hard-times-ahead-for-church-in-poland-after-cardinal-sanctioned-by-vatican/

Here's a nice example of sneering at a concentration camp survivor (and close advisor to John Paul II) for being so uncool as to think there is an affinity between abortion and the crimes committed in the camps. Read it against the grain and get some understanding of this impressive woman: aeon.co/essays/ravensbruck-to-papal-advisor-the-life-of-wanda-poltawska

Looks like Poland is about to fall - the opposition has promised to legalise abortion if elected, which exit polls are suggesting will happen: www.rte.ie/news/europe/2023/1015/1410959-poland-elections/N.B. This is not a blanket endorsement of PiS - but the blunt fact of the matter is that this election was ultimately about whether Poland would be pro-life or not, given the opposition's stance on that matter, and I make no apology for saying that if I were a Pole, I would have voted PiS despite my reservations about some of their policies.

Agreed - Civic Forum made all their candidates sign up to support limited abortion, whereas before they made it a conscience issue, and a lot of overseas coverage has focussed on abortion. Not all may be lost immediately - the president is in office until 2025 and has veto powers, and the Third Way party which is Civic Forum's likeliest coalition partner is making some noises on abortion - but the long term outlook is bad because there's a generational divide over secularisation (with the church having been involved in scandals, and many young women being responsive to claims that abortion bans endanger their health and lives). Many commentators are saying in a few decades Poland will be what Ireland is now.
