Of the newly cardinals over 80, the appointment of Father Prosper Grech OSA interested me. This is the first time in my memory that either an Augustinian or a Maltese has become a cardinal (I know Paul VI offered the Augustinian Prior General Agostino Trape the red hat, but Fr Trape declined).
However, promoting patristic theology has been a key element of Benedict's policy and this is something Fr Grech has given his life to. I don't know if anyone remember's the Meath priest, Fr David O'Hanlon. He studied under Fr Grech.

'Fr David O'Hanlon' - there's a blast from the past. The last I heard of him was that he was off to Rome to complete a Doctorate. Anyone know where he is now?

Fr Zuhlsdorf also notes the elevation of Fr Grech (an old teacher of his) and one of his commenters notes that Major-Archbishop Allencherry, though not LAtin-Rite, is favourable to the EF of the Latin Rite.

On another note, two of the nominees, Archbishops Dolan and Collins (New York and Toronto respectively) were part of the Apostolic Vistation to Ireland - Mgr Dolan to the seminaries and Mgr Collins to the Cashel Archdiocese.

John L Allen offers his thoughts on the new Cardinals. Interestingly, he sees Major-Archbishop Alencherry as "theologically moderate" because he supports Indian government policy on improving the lot of disadvantaged groups. A nice reminder of how the "conservative/liberal" distinction is oversimplified, especially in regard to Third World candidates. The absence of any new African cardinals and the fact that in a few months there will be no Filipino cardinal elector are both unfortunate. ncronline.org/blogs/ncr-today/five-observations-new-cardinals
