Just wondering is anyone familiar with the Catholic literary magazine, The St. Austin Review. I know it's edited by Joseph Pearce, which seems a good indicator. I read his work, " The Unmasking of Oscar Wilde ", & it was very impressive. Also as the Catholic World Report is ceasing to publish a paper edition ( I know it's going on-line ), can anyone recommend a suitable alternative. I alway's found it very orthodox, interesting & perceptive.

I saw it once - it struck me as having a lot of Michael O'Brien in it.

Thanks, hibernicus. Is that good or bad, or just too much of the same contributor ?.

The impression I got was that it had a bit too much of Michael O'Brien-style allegorical fables. I don't much care for O'Brien's work because it is a bit too over the top and simplistic - as with his crusade against Harry Potter.

Again thanks hibernicus. Funnily enough I was going to buy some of his works ( they are frequently advertised in the CWR ) ; people like Peter Kreeft have been complimentary about his latest book. But I take your point. Have you read any of Joseph Pearse's work. I have two, his biography's of Oscar Wilde & Roy Johnson ; & really enjoyed both.

That would be of Roy Campbell. I have read some articles by Pearce but not any of his books. I am a personal of critical disposition and I find him a bit too celebratory and not analytical enough. I get the impression that he has gone overboard a bit on the "Shakespeare was a Catholic" theory - Shakespeare may have been a Catholic but I doubt if he was nearly as fervent as Pearce makes him out. I have a couple of comments on O'Brien's CHILDREN OF THE LAST DAYS novels in the "Catholic literature" thread. Here is an interesting review of one of them by a Catholic bloggerr interested in apocalyptic speculation: www.johnreilly.info/eots.htmCWR is published by Ignatius Press, who also publish O'Brien - the magazine to a considerable extent acts as a showcase for authors published by Ignatius.

Thank you. Can I suggest you try " The Unmasking of Oscar Wilde " by Joseph Pearse. It certainly is an antidote to the type of Stephen Fry one-dimensional abuse of Oscar as a torch bearer for the extremist homosexual lobby ( I'm trying not to offend decent homosexual-oriented individuals ; just the offensive anti-Catholic Fry variety ).
