Fr. Patrick Banville has a brilliant article in last weeks Irish Catholic. He gets right to the heart of the vacuous/fundamentalist/intolerant nature of " Inda's " - " sovereign, democratic republic ". What a refreshing change from the ACP. There are still some admirable Priests out there.

Indeed, here's an interesting thought. The presidential candidates are all being invited to declare that they will put the constitution and the law of the land first and ignore any other source of authority (e.g. the church) whatsoever, and in most cases they are falling over themselves to do so. Right, then somebody should ask David Norris whether he obeyed the law of the land when it ruled that sodomy was illegal. OF course he did not, and he did not because he believed the law was unjust. For that matter, the "direct action" protesters who are lionised in large sections of the media habitually break the law in the name of a greater good. I don't seem to remember anyone saying the law must always be obeyed there - but when it comes to a clash between the law of God and the state, we are being told that the state must rule supreme and we must have no king but Caesar.
