In some recent threads even here we have had the likes of Athiests want votes for secular state. The media in Ireland right now is almost totally anti Catholic. With the demise of the Tribune is it not time for a group sympathetic to the Catholic World view to seek to take over an outlet we so badly need. With serious management and direction and of course proper funding Ireland could have a serious pro Catholic newspaper and web portal.I think people can talk all they like in forums like this and good as the likes of the Westmeath/Offaly/Meath Topic in supporting Catholic ethos it is essential to have a national newspaper with a Catholic ethos.Any ideas?

Good point. Using the medias for a catholic perspective point of view is essential. I think Alive ! is quite good regarding this. Not to mention it is free and distributed in nearly every churches.
Of course the best way would be to have a TV station or at least a Radio. Regarding the first one, I dream a bit. But on the second one, i think it is possible.
Also you have to take into consideration which population you are speaking to. To be honest, the vast majority of parishioners and faithful is now well over 60 years old. So the people and eventual readers of your paper/magazine or Website would be them in majority.
Most of the youth do not give a damn about religion any more. But there are the future. They are nice and friendly, but lots of them try to find a way to "happiness" into booze, drugs and sex.
This is, to my point of view, one of the most failure of the Irish Catholic Church in Ireland. To have, more or less, abandoned their young ones to privilege and please an older generation. I might be a bit tough and unfair, but we recognize a tree according to its fruits.
The young generation is a bit lost, cause they have nowhere to turn to, at least on the spiritual way.
So I think your new media should give a good part toward them. And not only bring news but also go back to the basic basis core of religion.

The TRIBUNE is pretty much dead meat - Independent Newspapers have been keeping it afloat for years and it is heavily indebted to them. It is run out of their Talbot Street offices, having disposed of its own some time ago. I don't see how a new proprietor could overcome these obstacles.

Of course the best way would be to have a TV station or at least a Radio. Regarding the first one, I dream a bit. But on the second one, i think it is possible. There is a new Christian radio station just started 'Spirit Radio'. Its available on FM in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. I've listened to it for half an hour or so in the late afternoon when it was music (easy listen pop / soft rock type of music). I see one of their guests in the morning part of the schedule was David Quinn. The Irish Catholic's TV/Radio critic gives it a general thumbs up but thinks it is overplaying the 'positive' slogan at the moment and is currently a little too 'pop orientated' for his liking. The station describe itself on their home page as: Upbeat, entertaining and inspirational, Spirit Radio plays the best contemporary Christian music alongside a mix of mainstream, positive chart music. Spirit’s news and talk features Christian voices speaking on the issues of the day, while all Spirit’s shows will have a common denominator, highlighting how ‘faith in God’ makes a real difference. The programming format is designed to incorporate lively discussions with thought provoking stories, from the humorous to the heart warming, but above all, uplifting. They are online at: www.spiritradio.ie/

Yes but i beleive the youth are like this due to the incredible brainwashing from the media with no alternative voice.the old may read the Catholic and alive but we must get a tv station/newspaper with serious viwers/readers to put our message across. Also we must be alive to the possibilities of new media.Quinn is doing agood job intellectually challengeing the medoa favourites but Catholics must take the initiative especially now with so much questioning of everything going on.surely this paper could be bought by agroup sympathetic to the church and our voice could be once agin put across. In Spain ABC is a powerful pro Catholic voice with also a very very powerful radio group while even France has the respected La Croix
