Isn't it this month our Maolsheachlann here is getting married? Let's keep him and his new wife in our prayers for a happy day and all the blessings that God can bring them.

I should have posted this earlier but I am doing it now. Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Fr Matt Wallace of Belfast, who died recently.

Your prayers are requested for Fr Francis Duffy, the new Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise. He and his diocese will need them in these dark times.

Pray for our Catholic brethren in Scotland, who are currently having to cope with the disclosure of some very nasty clerical abuse scandals and who may have more trouble ahead.

Your prayers are requested for Fr Tony Flannery who is having a difficult time at present. This request is meant perfectly seriously and is not ironic or snarky in any way.

Let's deal with a good news story for a change under prayers. Fr Seosamh Mallin SJ turns 100 today, making him the oldest Irish priest, the oldest Jesuit and the second Irish Jesuit to reach 100 (the late Proinnsias Ó Fionnagáin being the first). Fr Mallin is the son of Commandant Michael Mallin, second in command of the Irish Citizen Army who was executed on 8 May 1916, whom he visited in his cell with his pregnant mother, brothers and sister the night before. As such, he is the last surviving child of an executed 1916 leader. The account in the Irish Times is here: www.irishtimes.com/the-oldest-irish-priest-turns-100-in-hong-kong-1.1525627. For his father, see here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_MallinThis is a rare occasion when the Irish Times manages to come out with a good news story involving both the Catholic Church and Irish republicanism. So Father Mallin deserves our prayers on this, his hundreth birthday.

From time to time I have posted links to pieces by the American commentator Walter Russell Mead. His mother has died and prayers are in order for him and his family.
