The turn-out in Harrington Street yesterday was a little thin - I suspect the snow kept many regulars away. There were no pre-Mass confessions as usual - I suspect Fr Forde and the elderly Carmelite who usually hear them couldn't make it given the cold and their age. Another reminder that we should be grateful for the efforts they are still making to serve us in their twilight years, and how urgently new men will be needed to take up the yoke when they are gone.

My recent visits to Harrington Street have given me the distinct impression that there has been a move away from the dialogue Mass (responses said by the congregation) to the sung Mass (responses sung by the choir). Has anyone else had this impression, and if so, do you think this is a positive development or not?

This last is my impression overall in Ireland. Father Michael Cahill is the only priest saying the traditional Mass in Ireland I am aware of who tries to encourage a dialogue Mass. Likewise, the penchant for polyphony in Dublin renders congregational singing obsolete. The tendency overall seems to encourage a passive laity - I have seen low Masses virtually whispered. I know a great many people who see this as a good, even desirable, thing. I am not among them, and if I read the Holy Father's writings correctly, neither is he.

At St Kevin's last Sunday the priest announced that Fr Forde SM is no longer able to assist at the church on medical advice. He can be contacted at the Marist residence in Milltown. Fr Flanagan O Carm has returned to St Kevin's after his recent illness and heard confessions on Sunday. We should all be grateful to these faithful servants who pursue their Master's business and work to help us despite age and infirmity. Remember them in your prayers.

T I presumed that he was not referring to St Kevin's in Dublin (where of course there is no PP, just an administrator) because the OF congregation there is so small and there are plenty of churches within easy reach for those "without cars" for whom he is so solicitous. Just to let you know, Fr Deighan is no longer Adm in St Kevin's; he has reverted to curacy and a new Adm has been appointed. And I gather the new guy, a Fr Kenny, is no friend of the trads.

Speaking of the dialogue Mass and inaudibility - the last gospel [i.e first chapter of John, at the end of Mass] at Harrington Street last Sunday was pretty inaudible (I was about two-thirds of the way down the church). BTW at the LMSI Mass in Knock which I attended last month the choir started singing the Salve Regina when the priest was half-way through the last Gospel.

As regards the 'inaudibility' of the last Gospel: at Solemn (i.e. with Deacon and Sub-Deacon) and Sung Masses, R.G. n513-4 of the Missal does state that it should be read silently. It would have been normal (as outline in Fortescue) that the procession of servers 'form up' while the celebrant is reading it.

Father Joseph Koterski SJ said EF Mass in St Kevin's Oratory of the Pro-Cathedral on Monday. Surely a first?

I don't know where it is and I don't recognise the priest. It's in an older church (note the altar rails and the steps up to the altar) which seems to have been "renovated" by the look of the altar (though it might be a side altar). It's not in St Kevin's, or St Peter and Paul's in Cork, or St Paul's in Belfast. I also note that it's a dialogue Mass - the congregation are saying the responses, rather than just the server, and there are several people present. There was a Mass said for the feast of St John Vianney at a church dedicated to him in Artane - could this be it? (I have not found a picture of the church interior on the web, but the exterior suggests it is a modern church unlikely to have the older type of pews visible in the video.) Of course the fact that the priest has a Dublin accent does not mean it's in Dublin.

I could be wrong, but the server (shown in the second video, from ablutions onwards) seems to be Nick Lowry, but I could be wrong. Therefore, if this is the case, the mass may very well be in Dublin, and if so it appears from the announcement (that mass next week will be in the latin rite) that there may be a new regular latin mass in Dublin Deo Gratias!

I posted the question so hopefully he'll respond and solve your mystery for you!
Newtownmountkennedy is about as far as I got in response. I think there's a little linguistic barrier there so he may be off translating my questions. Wait and see for the priest's name.
