The Waterford and Lismore Diocese has a Catholic population of over 135,000 served by 161 priests (including religious) in 45 parishes. Its territory covers nearly all of Co Waterford and parts of counties Tipperary and Cork. Its official website is: www.waterfordlismore.com/. Bishop Michael Russell became Bishop of Waterford and Lismore in 1965 and was succeed by Bishop William Lee in 1993. There has been no history of SSPX activity in the Waterford and Lismore diocese. In 2006, Bishop Lee permitted a retreat with the traditional Mass take place in Mount Melleray Abbey, Co Waterford with the Abbot's consent. This was repeated in 2007. Mount Melleray is a Cistercian Abbey of Strict Observance.

There's a daily Mass in Dublin; two monthly in Cork; one monthly each in Belfast and Limerick; and occasional Masses in Galway and Derry.
This makes Waterford the largest city in Ireland without the traditional Mass.
What's going on?

I am going to voice surprise here. William Lee was president of St Patrick's College Thurles until he became Bishop of Waterford in 1993. Up until then Mass (Ordinary Form) was celebrated solemnly in Latin on at least a monthly basis. Students were expected to wear cassocks inside the seminary and black suits outside with - with white shirts and black ties prior to diaconate and with clerical collars from diaconate on. This was in keeping with the preconciliar Maynooth statutes (which FSSP and ICRSS students should be bound by in Ireland - as should the SSPX if they're serious).
My point - Bill Lee should be a friend to tradition.

Maybe Bill Lee is a friend of tradition, but the LMSI problem is that no volunteer has come forward from Waterford to actively seek the Mass. If someone contacts Vicky Nestor ( vickynestor@gmail.com), the LMSI will throw its whole weight behind the initiative. It's as simple as that.

(ps : I saw her in the plane to Chartres.... Say nothing, i was on the "wrong side" of the Pilgrimage...) ;D, so I kept quiet. God Bless !

Afraid not, Guillaume, Ferns/Wexford is in the LMSI's Leinster Province, so you need Nick Lowry for that: brandsmabooks@eircom.net

TO REITERATE THE SERIOUSNESS OF MY POINT, I AM WRITING IN BLOCK CAPITALS WHICH I GATHER IS THE E-MAIL EQUIVALENT OF SHOUTING.
WATERFORD CITY IS THE LARGEST CENTRE OF CATHOLIC POPULATION IN IRELAND WITHOUT THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM MASS. IF EVEN ONE PERSON IN THE CITY IS PREPARED TO BE THE 'PERSON ON THE GROUND', THE LMSI HAS STATED IT WILL THROW ITS WHOLE WEIGHT BEHIND THE EFFORT AS IT HAS DONE SO SUCCESSFULLY IN CORK, BELFAST, LIMERICK, DERRY AND GALWAY (AND OTHER SMALLER PLACES). SO DOES ANYONE WANT TO TAKE THIS UP? ALL THAT IS NEEDED IS A CONTACT PERSON IN THE CITY.

Waterford and Lismore still in limbo?
I heard the Bishop as rector of St Patrick's College, Thurles had a solemn Ordinary Form Latin Mass in the seminary on at least a monthly basis. Is there anything good liturgically happening under his watch in Waterford? Assuming there is still no trad Mass there.

I posted the last without reading the thread - I thought I had some news. But the question remains the same.

Permission has been given for EF Latin Mass in Waterford Cathedral on 20 April (Saturday) at 1 pm. The celebrant will be Father Gabriel Burke. This will be the first open EF Mass (there were a few as part of retreats in Mount Mellary in the past) in the Waterford & Lismore diocese, so it counts as a breakthrough. More information to follow.
