Limerick is a diocese with a Catholic population of 160,000 in 60 parishes served by 178 priests, including religious. Its territory includes most of Co Limerick and parts of counties Kerry and Clare. Its official website is: www.limerickdiocese.org/ .
Bishop Jeremiah Newman was Bishop of Limerick between 1974 and 1995. Bishop John Magee of Cloyne then served as Apostolic Administrator of Limerick until Bishop Donal Murray was appointed bishop in 1996. Mgr Murray had been an Auxilliary Bishop in Dublin since 1982.
Soon after the motu proprio, Ecclesia Dei Adflicta, the Cork Examiner featured a front page story of a Solemn High Mass in the Redemptorist Church in Limerick. But nothing more was to happen until Mgr Murray became bishop and Ecclesia Dei Ireland organised a few Masses in the Jesuit Church.
Following the foundation of the Latin Mass Society of Ireland in 1999, Limerick quickly became a hub of LMSI activity, with Masses in the parish church of Adare and in the Augustinian Church in O'Connell St. A solemn high Mass by a team from the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter was made into a commercial video, still available through the LMSI website (www.latinmassireland.org )Bishop Murray gave permission to the LMSI to organise Mass every Sunday and Holy day in 2001, but left the means up to them. To date, no priest working in the diocese has volunteered his services for this purpose and a great many were contacted. However, Mass was organised on a sporadic basis in many locations in Limerick City over the years, including St John's Cathedral at least twice.
The breakthrough in Limerick came through when the LMSI group suggested to the Institute of Christ the King that they look at the Jesuit Church. Although the move did not stop the sale of the Jesuit Church to a developer, the principle result was to have a priest of the Institute come to Limerick once a month to say Mass in St Patrick's Church on the Dublin Road since March 2006. This was augmented last year by the availability of Father Seamus Horgan, a Killaloe priest serving in Uganda, over the Christmas.
