Unfortunately the attendance at the first Mass will be greatly compromised by the fact that the leinster final is on that afternoon & Kilkenny is featuring in the game, so many who would otherwise be there simply will not come.

Notwithstanding disappointment at Kilkenny's defeat of Dublin yesterday (but it is respectable for a team like Dublin to go down to Kilkenny by less than ten points in a championship match; and this is only the second time I've seen Dublin in a Leinster Senior Hurling final), I would say that any dint in the crowd in Kilkenny would be negligible. It is a weekly Mass which is altogether different than the monthly Masses experienced elsewhere and it is not crucial that there be an incredible crowd on the first occasion. You may find that the average attendence may be much lower than Dublin or Cork or Limerick, but you'll also find many regular attendees that don't go every week and if you put all the frequent attenders together, you'll find that the sum total is much higher that the average attendance.
Hurling success will always be a feature in Kilkenny - but look at it another way. If you get a senior county hurler attending the Mass with any frequency, and better attributing success in the field to his prayers at the Mass, you'll have more people at the Mass than you reckoned.
I think the biggest sporting legend I saw at the Dublin Mass was the legendary Dublin forward Jimmy Keaveney on an occasional basis, but unfortunately he was long forgotten by devotees of Hill 16 at the time. Otherwise, I think the profile of the Dublin congregation (not to mention the accent) would be very different. (And Father Deighan might need an interpreter on such circumstances).

Kilkenny is doing very well thank God and it's great to have the weekly Mass because people know it's on every Sunday and don't have to be watching whether it's the second Sunday or third Sunday of the month or whatever. There is a good attendance every week.

The first Sunday, a good attendance of around 70. Last Sunday's attendance exceeded that. The second Sunday there was a smaller number. Early days and we have to wait for the numbers to stabilise. Great to have it anyway whatever the number.

I would reckon an average of 70 + or - to be very good in Kilkenny. If you asked me prior to the establishment of the Mass in Kilkenny, I would have guessed that it would have been reasonable to expect a congregation of 60. So, to me, 70 is a very good performance in Kilkenny.

Yes it's good but to build a consolidated and stable group will be the work of many months. While it's very comforting to have good numbers, the main thing is to have theTraditional Mass celebrated. And if people sometimes find themselves starting off with numbers of between 6 and 12 they should not be discouraged but with God's help keep trying as it often is an upward struggle.

Due to unforseen circumstances I will be unable to post on this board for some time to come. In the meantime I wish all posters well and in an especial way all those who are advancing the cause of the Traditional Mass in Ireland.

Who'll be the deacon and subdeacon on Sunday, Eircomnet?
Presumably, Father O'Toole is celebrant.
