The Diocese of Achonry has just under 36,000 Catholics in 23 parishes served by 48 priests. It covers territory in parts of counties Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. It is the second smallest diocese in Ireland. Its official website is: www.achonrydiocese.org/Achonry is the only Irish diocese to which the late John Paul II never made an appointment. Bishop Thomas Flynn was appointed by Pope Paul VI in 1976 and served until he was replaced by Mgr Brendan Kelly in 2007. Bishop Kelly was Vicar General of the Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora Diocese until then. Achonry has no history of SSPX activity. The first traditional Mass took place in the Cathedral of the Annunciation and St Nathy, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon in June 2005 and has been repeated on an annual basis every year since. Annectdotal evidence in the LMSI states that on one occasion, the Connaught provincial chairman telephoned Mgr Flynn while he was eating lunch and his secretary promised to carry the message. The bishop telephoned back a quarter of an hour later, excused himself and granted the permission which was only being sought tentatively.

Sounds like a once a year affair. Is there much interest around there?

Hard to say - certainly no one seems motivated to do anything about it.

I hear the LMSI Connaught Chairman is looking for a pointman in Achonry. Anyone know anybody?
The last person doing the job couldn't handle it.

Unfortunately I forgot to advertise this year's Mass in Ballaghadereen Cathedral, which got a good attendance once again.

Incredibly busy so I'm not doing a lot of posting. Father John Loftus is due to say the EF Mass in Ballaghadereen Cathedral on 22 September. This may be cancelled at short notice, but contact john_heneghan@hotmail.com for further information.

Clashes with the pro-life conferences in Dublin, which is unfortunate

These are often done long in advance, but at the end of the day, this is pitched at locals in Roscommon and Mayo.
