Meath is a diocese with over 220,000 Catholics in 69 parishes served by 244 priests (if the number appears high, it is because there are a number of religious communities in the diocese). It is made up of most of counties Meath, Westmeath and Offaly and parts of counties Longford, Louth, Dublin and Cavan. It shares a border with the Killaloe diocese which divides Ireland in two. Its official website is: www.dioceseofmeath.ie/ .
When the indult came into force in 1984, Bishop John McCormack had been Bishop of Meath since 1968, resigning in 1990. Bishop Michael Smith was named as Auxilliary Bishop of Meath in 1983, becoming Coadjutor Bishop in 1988 and succeeding Mgr McCormack in 1990 - therefore being a bishop in the Meath diocese throughout the whole period under consideration.
In 2000, Bishop Smith recognised the work of Father Michael Cahill as chaplain to the St Patrick's Chapter on the Paris-Chartres walk and also as Chaplain to the newly formed Latin Mass Society of Ireland (www.latinmassireland.org). Father Cahill was curate in Kinnegad at the time, but since his transferr to Batterstown in 2002, Batterstown has been the venue of a few extraordinary form Masses annually.
In recent months, Father David Jones, a Praemonstratensian canon of the Abbey of Sant'Antimo in Italy, has been living in Duleek, Co Meath as a hermit with a mission of celebrating the liturgy in a traditional manner and is shortly due to say the extraordinary form in Batterstown. He says it privately in Duleek almost every day.
Recent months has shown more interest register among some of the younger clergy of the Meath diocese.
