This is a very useful discussion of de Gaulle's Catholicism which has a lot of information which I didn't know (for example, that de Gaulle praised Maritain's PEASANT OF THE GARONNE, that he generally made a point - except in Poland - of not receiving Communion at public ceremonies which he attended in his capacity as President of the Republic). In one respect, however, the profile is too reverential. It doesn't note that de Gaulle's policies often had an element of cold and ruthless Realpolitik (for example, he refused to allow numerous Algerians who had fought for France in the Algerian independence war to take refuge in France with their families, although he knew they would be massacred; he and his lieutenant Jacques Foccart upheld some extremely nasty dictators in the Francafrique). This is why some critics (mentioned in the article) have doubted that he was a believer at all. How he reconciled these things is between him and God, who has already judged him; it's not for us to do so. www.catholicworldreport.com/2020/11/08/the-faith-of-charles-de-gaulle/

I wonder how historically informed the thugs are; their attitude to Catholicism and Catholics remind me of nothing so much as Glasgow Rangers' fans, who come from a slightly different perspective.
