The priest just very quickly mentioned the vigil during the usual parish notes, but no emphasis was placed on it, you had to listen very carefully to catch it.
As for today's homily, it followed the usual format : a light and fluffy humanist/vaguely Christian style story, vaguely related to the gospel of the day, carefully avoiding doctrine, church teachings, or anything specifically Catholic, and certainly never going anywhere near explaining and defending church teaching with regard to current issues in the world. The Priest is a nice chap though, so I suppose I shouldn't be too sore on him. No homily will suit everyone I guess.

That's disappointing but at least the Vigil is being mentioned I suppose, so small mercies. Annie I agree, my own church is quite sparky about it too. The city centre in Dublin has the posters displayed up on lamposts. Is it just my end of Dublin that has these posters, has anyone else noticed them? This is the the request from Archbishop Martin www.dublindiocese.ie/content/dignity-human-life-abortionA Holy Hour pre Vigil is poignant considering its origin. I hope a full church gives the Archbishop the nod that he is being asked to dance.

It may be worth having a small part of the protest outside of the Gresham Hotel in Dublin as the National Executive Board of Labour will be meeting there from 11 to 1 on Saturday 19th.

I've been reading a lot lately so can't cite the source ( it could have been these forums) but apparently Planned Parenthood are taking notice of that 41% statistic and reframing the militant pro-choice to an "it's so complicated" leaving a huge grey area that leaves their business open. Can I plug the Baby Ben Fund while I'm here? www.familyandlife.org/campaign/baby-ben-fundAlso we really need to found a perinatal hospice in this country, seriously now. www.thelifeinstitute.net/latest-news/alert-please-support-our-perinatal-hospice-campaign-on-facebook/Nuns would have done this years ago, it's up to laity because James Reilly isn't going to glance his eye on a project like that. Wouldn't it be wonderful if some kind soul donated land and those qualified got in there to build it themselves, then donating it to the HSE. I don't even know if that would be legal but it won't happen for decades if left to Reilly, services and salaries are all slashed to the bone, no budget for anything extra or necessary anymore. In relation to the human rights issue I was sent this link and found it interesting. abolishhumanabortion.com/ The story of the abolitionist movement is one I've used before I read of their work and found it effective. It does tend to *make people stop and reflect*, it warms the cockles of your heart to see them join the dots and widen their eyes at the implications. ;D

Normally I would agree but I bet you a penny to a pound that if 2 million marched that evening the papers would reported that 73 people protested outside the Gresham as their headline!

And they would say that it represented a disgraceful attempt to intimidate public representatives. BTW "Bishop" Pat Buckley's blog, which I will not link to on principle, has a rant declaring that the pro-life issue raises the question of whether the bishops or the elected representatives will rule Ireland. ("Bishop" Pat predictably says he is against abortion on demand but in favour of so many loopholes that it will amount to the same thing in practice, just in case you were wondering.) If he only knew the low opinion which many pro-lifers have of the bishops as a body... Stephen Collins, who appears to be acting as a press mouthpiece for Inda, had an article on a similar theme in the IRISH TIMES some days ago

Family and Life report that the (female) representative of one of the "pro-choice" groups who testified before the Oireachtas said when questioned that they were opposed to banning sex-selection abortions (i.e. undertaken solely where the child is of the "wrong" sex) on the grounds that these were due to patriarchal attitudes and that banning them would do nothing to change said attitudes while making it harder for women to access "healthcare" - i.e. abortion. www.prolife.ie/news/2013/01/17/irish-choice-group-would-allow-sex-selection-abortionsEXTRACT Deputy Terence Flanagan (Fine Gael, Dublin North East) put a question to all the groups represented whether they would “support the choice of a woman who wishes to abort her baby because the baby’s gender poses a mental health threat to the mother”. Jacinta Fay responded that Choice Ireland believes that “such practices [as sex selective abortion] are due to patriarchal structures and that male preference is a result of gender norms which value males over females.” You might imagine on that basis that the group would oppose it. Fay argued against a ban on sex selection abortion, however, on the grounds that it “would not counteract the entrenched gender bias that underlines this practice”. She said such bans have been ineffective in other places, and “have further exacerbated gender discrimination by undermining women’s autonomy and creating additional obstacles to women’s health care”. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children. January 10. END According to the SUNDAY TIMES last Sunday (link not available) another pro-choice activist, who happened to be pregnant, testifying before the committee, declared "what is growing inside me is not a baby; it's a foetus - I'm not a mother, I'm a pregnant woman". I can say all I like "I'm a man - I'm not a mammal"; that won't make it true. More mental and moral incoherence HERE from Vincent Browne - note how he segues from invoking "mother's life" to arguing a total pro-choice position: www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2013/0116/1224328903239.html

I have never read such monumental drivel in my entire life! It reinforces my (probably unjustified) opinion that people with degrees are just as likly to be crackpots as the rest of us! Emer O'Kelly makes a somewhat similar point in the Sunday Independent when she highlights the canonisation of Gianna Beretta who died in 1962 and who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and who refused treatment and died a week after giving birth. Emer is critical of the Church for making such a special case of this woman who, I assume she thinks, made the wrong choice. I think this woman made a heroic choice which deserves to be recognised. What parent, would not throw themselves under a bus or jump into the sea to save their child? There are many cases of heroics being performed to save children. So what's the difference if they are as yet unborn.

This is not the first time Emer O'Kelly has denounced St Gianna Beretta Molla for making what she considers an immoral choice, and gone on to denounce the Church for endorsing said choice by canonising her. On this occasion, however, O'Kelly excelled her usual ignorance by spelling the Saint's last name "Moller".
