My mistake. With it being Advent, I assumed that it was.

I posted my explanation for choosing St John on the Saints thread - his feast is on the 27th, we are having readings from the Apocalypse as the year draws to a close, and the declaration that the light shines in darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it is very relevant both to the present time of year and to the ferocious onslaught being made by the advocates of abortion. (Cf the candle-lit pro-life vigil yesterday.) I chose the particular image because of the Marian dimension and because I was very impressed by a version of the icon when it was used at the Eucharistic Congress. Mistaking the image for St Joseph is understandable because St John is shown as an old man rather than the conventional image of a beardless young man, and it gave me the sense that he had sacrificed his youth caring for her. The Greek inscription means THE THEOLOGIAN which is how the Greek refer to St John. BTW there is a connection with your own sigil - John Henry Newman was clear that his patron saint was St John the Evangelist (whereas St John Fisher for example was clear that his was John the Baptist). Very appropriate considering that Newman was at the Alexandrine or spiritualising side of the theological spectrum.

I will not be online again until after the New Year. I would like to wish members of the forum and its readers all the blessings of Christmas and a particular thanks to Hibernicus for his contribution here as a poster and moderator.

Thanks for this, Louise. I will only be posting occasionally from now until New Year but will still keep an eye on the board. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all, despite the Mayo Herod and his allies.

I've been offline for a few days because of technical problems. These have now been resolved but for personal reasons (nothing serious) I will only be posting occasionally for the next few days.

So I'm putting on my tinfoil hat today. Did anybody have trouble getting Catholic websites to work yesterday? I couldn't get on to this website, Catholic Answers forums and another one, a prominent one that I can't quite remember now. Was there a particular reason this site was down Hibernicus? I'm wondering if this is the first sign of the impending zombie apocalypse and if it will happen before or after the Conclave, so I can stock up on the tinned tuna and bottled water.

I had no problem getting onto it yesterday evening. What time did you try? Fr Zuhlsdorf said there was a brief denial of service on his blog a few days ago and he was told later it was an attack

Ok I read that thread of his and apparently Supertradmum had difficulty too. It was yesterday afternoon and the evening time when I tried to log on here, the site just wouldn't load. Hmmm. Maybe with Conclave and people paying attention anything with Catholic is just overloaded, or under attack, or it's the aliens. Definitely the aliens.
On a side note I remember reading years ago about the head of the Vatican website being a middle-aged nun and she sees off so many attacks every day from people trying to hack the site. I just love the idea of geeky programming nerds taking on a middle-aged nun and losing. :-)

I had some difficulty with my internet connection last night but I don't think it was an attack - just some sort of technical glitch.

What are the forum rules on advertising?

Regular posters have great latitude to promote books, services etc so long as they are relevant to the forum. Posters who register and immediately start advertising X's Product (creating a reasonable assumption that they are just spammers) will be zapped instantly.

Hibernicus what is the revamp of the boards about come the 29th? Is it yourselves organising it or a hosting site plan of action? I don't know if that is the correct way to put it since I know so little about computers.
