PROSPECT magazine is currently holding its annual poll in which voters pick one from a list of 50 influential intellectuals. The only Irish name I noticed on the list (from a fairly casual glance) is Sally Rooney, the perpetrator of NORMAL PEOPLE. For those of us still blissfully unaware of NORMAL PEOPLE, it is a novel recently adapted as an RTE/Netflix serial which economised drastically on the costume budget and thereby made up the cost of hiring an "intimacy co-ordinator". (Don't ask.)

Ihear Gemma O'Donerty is involved in a campaign to hold a Rosary rally outside Croke Park in protest at it being used for Muslims to celebrate the feast of Eid-al-adha (at the end of the Ramadan fast, marking the supposed first revelation of Koranic verses to Mohammed) as they cannot hold an indoor celebration because of coronavirus.
Quite frankly, I think the Croke Park authorities are right to make it available for this purpose, as the place is a public facility. It is one thing to disagree with Islam, or with Muslims on matters of public policy; it is quite another thing to object to their ordinary acts of worship. It is particularly foolish to make an implicit appeal to Caesar to suppress them, when Caesar is increasingly hostile to us. I admit the hot air emanating from certain media outlets about how this shows how diverse we have become and how we have shaken off the Catholic yoke, makes me cringe. The answer is to stay at home and pray for the conversion of misbelievers.

I hadn't heard of this, but I agree with your take.
If we want freedom of worship and our religious beliefs to be respected, we must have the same respect for other religious beliefs.

Not somuch from the papers as the discussion sites: www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/silicon-valley-basilisk-ireland-chile/ Rod Dreher on how the international spread of US protests which on the face of it are about US issues reflect the influence of Silicon Valley, both in propagating these causes and in the ways the technology itself shapes and encourages such types of protest. Dreher also notes this article by an Irish commentator on the role of multinational corporations in shaping Irish "modernisation". I think the article is a bit oversimplistic in its view of "traditional" Irish nationalism which goes back much further than 1916 (it's noteworthy that the 1966 commemorations, shaped by those who actually took part, emphasised a longer nationalist genealogy going back to at least 1798, while the 2016-23 commemoration emphasises a spontaneous outbreak and a clean break with the past) and nebulous in hinting at an alternative, but at least it's food for thought: unherd.com/2020/07/will-ireland-survive-the-woke-wave/ Oh,and I certainly would not describe Conor Cruise O'Brien as "genteel". He was often demented, and he knew he was fighting for high stakes.

Jonathan van Maren notes an article in the DAILY TELEGRAPH by one of that paper's pet feminists on the recent revelation that undercover pro-lifers recorded doctors providing medical justification sight unseen for abortions on any grounds, however frivolous. The TELEGRAPH writer responds by proclaiming - yes, indeed - it is quite OK to have an abortion because you want a good "bikini body" for your summer holidays or for any other reason you care tomention. How odd to think that some years back the TELEGRAPH did its own undercover expose on doctors who were okaying sex-selection abortions... www.lifesitenews.com/blogs/killing-your-unborn-baby-to-keep-bikini-body-no-abortion-too-frivolous-for-feminists

Recently a Dutch doctor was prosecuted for killing a dementia patient who had signed an advance directive asking for euthanasia whenever she requested it, although she had not specifically requested to have it when she did, and in fact physically resisted being killed. The doctor was acquitted with various media outlets including the IRISH TIMES complaining that the prosecution should never have been brought in the first place. Now the regulations have been changed to allow doctors to sedate patients surreptitiously before killing them, to avoid any such distressing resistance in future. This is what we have become (or soon will become, once the IRISH TIMES-reading medical ethicists are let loose). www.nationalreview.com/corner/dutch-doctors-can-now-drug-dementia-patients-before-killing-them-to-prevent-resistance/

An Irish radical feminist who doesn't accept that you can change genders simply by saying so writes in a British magazine pointing out the anti-democratic implications of a recent statement by various groups (including Amnesty and the Abortion Rights Campaign) calling on the Irish media not to cover/interview opponents of the radical transgender agenda and on politicians not to represent them - in short, for them to be silenced and disenfranchised. We are also given a summary of some recent problems caused by prisoners guilty of violence against women declaring themselves to be women and getting transferred to women's prisons, and reminded that since 2015 Ireland has had very radical transgender legislation which allows anyone who so desires to change sex at the stroke of a pen. (This has been accompanied by very little media discussion except by some cheerleading focused on individual campaigners.) Make no mistake, Ms Bartosch is on the wrong side on a lot of other issues - it is quite clear from her article that she believes there is a right to abortion, for example - but however hostile they may be to us they deserve credit for standing up for reality in this instance, when there can be a significant price to be paid for failing to eulogise the beauty of the emperor's jewelled garments. This is also yet another example of social conservatives in Ireland being caught napping by not paying enough attention to what the other side is doing. This may seem like a marginal radical issue today, but these groups are well able to move it to centre stage tomorrow and get the government to agree that any other source of action is "cruel" and "phobic". Oh, and if you don't think the Abortion Rights Campaign and their ilk would like to extend this "no platforming" principle to have pro-lifers regarded as the equivalent of racists, you have another think coming. (They will, of course, be ably assisted by certain individuals who claim to be pro-lifers who actually are racists, and who should be shunned by all pro-lifers.) thecritic.co.uk/amnesty-and-political-prisoners-in-ireland/

This is something for anyone who is tempted to idealise Vladimir Putin. Russia declared Jehovah's Witnesses illegal three years ago and is now raiding gatherings held by Witnesses in their own homes. The Jehovah's Witnesses are dreadfully mistaken in many of their beliefs, but I must say their commitment to their faith and their firmness on such matters as the defence of unborn life put nominal Catholics to shame. As human persons - children of God - they have a right to religious freedom, and the fact that this was not always respected in Ireland in the past should make us all the more concerned to speak and pray for them now. www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55061919

The IRISH TIMES for Thursday 16 February reports that the Dublin archdiocese is applying to change the zoning of over 30 churches to allow for housing to be built on the site (presumably they expect at some stage to close and sell the churches and want to enhance the sale value). One of the churches listed is St Kevin's, Harrington Street, Dublin 8. This is cheerful news for everyone who has contributed to the restoration work in recent years.

Graham Linehan describes how his criticism of transgender ideology has caused him to be harassed by a Twittermob, his career has been wrecked and his marriage has broken up. The story includes examples of tweets gloating over his misfortunes and proclaiming that he deserves no pity because he is part of a 'cult" that persecutes transgenders. (Presumably the "cult" is a reference to Terfs, so-called Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists.) www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10648259/Father-Ted-creator-Graham-Linehan-breaks-tears-trans-attacks.html I remember how disgracefully Mr Linehan behaved in the campaign to repeal the `Pro-Life Amendment, and how in many ways he is characteristic of the smug atheist - but he still deserves our sympathy here, because he is being persecuted for telling the truth - namely that not only is the Emperor wearing no clothes, but that the Emperor is not in fact the Empress.
