When I was passing through Trinity about 6pm last Thursday, I saw six Coptic priests walking in front of me. (I thought they might be bishops because they wore pectoral crosses, but apparently all Coptic priests do this.) I was surprised to see so many Coptic priests together in Ireland, since the community must be fairly small. Was there some special event on?

Perhaps it was connected to celebrating Ascension Thursday.

I doubt it, because the Eastern Churches have different liturgical calendars from us, so they'd celebrate it at different dates. Besides, since they celebrate it every year they are not likely to bring over priests for the occasion (the community in Ireland is too small to support six). Perhaps they have acquired a new church and were there for its consecration?

For anyone who is wondering what became of the second schismatic group that broke with the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church around the same time as Fr Kovpak's Society of St Josaphat (aligned with SSPX). Apparently they have gone sedevacantist, anathematising Pope Francis and declaring Archbishop Vigano the new Pope. I doubt whether the Archbishop will take up the offer. sarumuse.wordpress.com/2019/10/29/enigma-variations/HEALTH WARNING: The link is to a blog run by a dotty episcopus vagans who after perambulating through various forms of Anglican and Catholic traditionalism (including a stay at the ICKSP seminary in Gricigliano) has now settled down as a Fr Tyrell-style Modernist officiating to a "continuing Anglican" congregation in France. Read with caution.

An Eastern Orthodox monastery for women opens in a former Ursuline convent in Co. Clare. At one level this is a sad sign of the times, with the ongoing demise of Catholic religious life in Ireland. At least these nuns, though schismatic, still have the Eucharist. I tend to save what spare money I have for Catholic and pro-life causes, but a few prayers might not go amiss. www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/orthodox-women-monastery-ireland/

Prayers are requested for our Christian brethren in Armenia, caught in conflict with Azerbaijan and Turkey. Prayers also for the innocent on both sides as cities are targeted with missiles. I would not be so confident as the author of the article below that the fault is all on the Azeri side (he doesn't mention that thousands of Azeris were expelled from the territory linking Nagorno-Karabakh from the rest of Armenia after the Armenians came out on top in the last bout of fighting) but given the history of the Armenian genocide, my sympathies have to be with Armenia. www.firstthings.com/web-exclusives/2020/10/christian-armenia-under-attack

Grim news for our Ethiopian brethren, and for those Irish-based members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church whose demeanour I have often admired as they go in to their Divine Liturgy at Synge Street on Sundays. Civil war has broken out between the new government in Addis Ababa, which is trying to impose a more centralised form of governance, and the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (in the north of the country) which dominated the national government until recently. Eritrea also apears to be involved. See the BBC story linked below for details. I don't know what (if any) religious implications this has, or what the consequences may be. All I ask is prayers for the peoples of Ethiopia and for their diaspora, so many of whom must be concerned for their loved ones - and keep an eye out for humanitarian appeals if there are any. www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-54932333

I think the Pope is a good man for the broad gesture - and he got this right - but what's important is follow up. For that we'll have to wait and see.
