What do you think of what Fr. Terry O' Connell has to say about a charity magic show in Limerick? See here www.limerickleader.ie/3419/Limerick-priest-hits-out-at.3840537.jpHe was on Joe Duffy today too. I don't have time to post my thoughts right now......interested to here what others make of it. In short - I think he's way off the mark saying what he did.

I'm not sure. I think it was a bit excessive. Also, I think I might take him more seriously if he dressed like a priest, but that may just be my own prejudices clouding my vision.

To my mind he seemed to be seriously confusing (deliberately it seemed) the occult with entertaining magical tricks. He claimed that slight of hand wasn't simply a (God given) gift/skill/talent but was something evil that was outlawed by Old Testament teaching and (he claimed) by Church teaching.
It was really, really pointless. Another (humble and somewhat embarressed) priest of the Diocese of Limerick phoned into the Joe Duffy show to point out how misguided Fr. O' Connell was - of course he was having none of it. He repeatedly claimed that priests who did not agree with him (who had themselves done magic tricks) "should question their priesthood" which I took to mean they weren't real priests. He also repeatedly compared criticisms of him to the criticisms which Our Lord experienced in his teaching.
I must admit - the fact that he wasn't wearing clericals made me ponder too. Also, he mentioned his devotion to Our Ladt of Medjugorje. Now, if I remember rightly, Medjugorje has a big question mark over it - not recognised by the local diocese or Rome (I'm open to correction). So it seems he's pedantic on certain aspects of Church teaching but plays fast and loose with others.
Anyway, in all charity, I wish him well but he really has taken a silly view in a pointless argument! It's entertainment!!!

Neither the local bishop nor Rome has accepted Medjugorje and both have made it clear that they have serious doubts about it. (From what I have heard about it, it is nonsense, but perhaps I am damned for that and Our Lady will dance on my grave. However that would not be consistent with what we know of Her.) It would be better (in my opinion) if Fr O'Connell dressed like a priest, said Mass properly (perhaps he does, and if so I apologise) and kept a lower media profile.

Michael, Where have you read that Rome has serious doubts about Medjugorje ? I don't believe in it myself, but I would like to know for sure about the doubts. Why does Rome allow it to continue? In fact, I had the Medjugorje monthly messages stopped being said, at a prayer group I went to , by complaining to the parish priest. Any literature left in the church is removed also. And of course, the Medj lot are getting all excited because Rome has recently approved of an Marian Shrine in the French Alps. Now they think they are in with a good chance of being approved also. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/1927473/New-French-shrine-%27could-rival-Lourdes%27.html*

I'm afraid I can't remember where I saw it. It was quite some years ago, and the information was second-hand in an article in, I think, the Sunday Telegraph. As for why Rome allows it to continue, I don't know that there is much they can do about it - unfortunately.
