I read recently that a student in MI (Mary Immaculate College of Education, Limerick) claimed that in MI students are taught that all religions are equally valid and that no lecturer there claimed that the Catholic Church is the one true Church. The student also said that some of the teachers teaching Catholic theology are not Catholic.
Accepting that what I wrote may not accurately reflect the student's views, the student may not accurately reflect the teachers' views and that the teachers' views may not reflect accurately the views of MI, I wonder what do any of you think of this controversy.
Please let me know your opinions.
Are you surprised?

I'm surprised.................................... that someone would actually want to start a discussion based on a situation he'd pointed out might never have happened in the first place. And here's one for later: A student told me that at Trinity the teachers are telling students that aliens exist and that all alien claims are equal and that aliens are running the government. Accepting that what I wrote may not accurately reflect the student's views, the student may not accurately reflect the teachers' views, the teachers' views may not reflect accurately the views of Trinity, and the views of Trinity may not reflect the views of the aliens.....I wonder what do any of you think of this controversy. Are you flabbergasted....? What is your opinion of aliens running the government? R2D2, Stardate 89999900 FitzQuadrant...

Assuming what you say is true I answer it thus.
I am not surprised, why should I?
Do I can that they are teaching that all religions are equal? Yes, very much so, at least, somewhere has taken the right road. All religions are equal, not matter what.
Where the hell is the controversy?! I'm sorry if I can't see it, I really want to. All I can see is a college doing a fine good job of teaching without prestigious... Oh wait I found it, the fact that it has taken this long for it to happen...

Newsflash: Something may or may not be true.
But if they are true, then it seems like a bit of political correctness.

Newsflash: Something may or may not be true. But if they are true, then it seems like a bit of political correctness. A student of UCD has told me that he always knew there were aliens in Trinity. Accepting that his views may not accurately reflect the views of Trinity from Dame St. and accepting that Dame St may not accurately reflect the students views because he is in UCD what do you think of this controversy? I can't tell you the students name because my views of his views may not accurately reflect the shiny side of a new saucepan with a north facing handle. I have to go now: I wish a Good irishNight

Oh dear.
I would prefer to get responses rather than to be ignored, but it seems the query I posed initially is being treated in a flippant way.
I must admit I was an alien once and when I lived in the States I had a card to prove it. Also an alien (Mr Sarkosy) is trying to run our country.
Irishknight wrote "Well as a UCD student I always knew there was aliens in Trinity". Would you now from what he wrote that he was a UCD student?
However seriously it seems from the tone of the replies that some subscribers do not believe the Catholic Church is the one true Church. I had thought that the four marks of being one, holy, Catholic and apsodtolic show that the Church is the true Church.
One could argue about what "extra ecclesia nulla salus" menas. However that can wait.
Let us establish first whether Catholics subscribing to this roundtable believe that the Catholic Church is the one true Church.
Please would the Catholics here let me know where they stand on this.

Oh dear. I would prefer to get responses rather than to be ignored, but it seems the query I posed initially is being treated in a flippant way. I must admit I was an alien once and when I lived in the States I had a card to prove it. Oh so was I but once you've been out over six months you're back to square one. Having said that I wouldn't set foot in the place again if I won a free holiday. Throwing in a bit of the ancient language of Pagan Rome always strikes me as being the equivalent of those kids who pass down the road with their speakers vibrating the windows. They think everyone looks at them as being so cool but the opposite is true. They imagine they are so impressive and hip but it's all in their imagination. Let us establish first whether Catholics subscribing to this roundtable believe that the Catholic Church is the one true Church. Please would the Catholics here let me know where they stand on this. If that's the question that's what you'd have been better off asking in the first place instead of the confused OP referring specifically to the situation in a particualr college which you went on the say you were'nt sure existed. Eh does my view accurately reflect your view of the view of the students views of the teachers views of the colleges views?

Just in relation to the one true church, this is something which every religion believes. However, teaching the believes of all religions or at least the big five, is something which I find to be important. By doing so, the education system is ensuring that people under other believe systems. Ireland plays host to many believes, from Christianity to Islam to Scientology, and as such, at least some major religions should be in the class room along side Christianity.

Thanks to all who are contrituting to this debate. Royalosiodhachain is an old friend of mine, whom I have had disccusssions with in the Catholic Exchange Forum. Falconer and Irishknight are new friends. We may disagree but I hope we respect each others' views. Your second sentence would preclude the desire of any rational person to be included in your third. If you want friends sign up for Bebo ;D Views that deserve respect should get respect and those that don't shouldn't. Auto-respect is one of the great curses of the human race. If in your view, for example, someone should still be respected, welcomed or celebrated, even after covering up child rape then your views won't get respect: it will be no quarter given and no quarter asked for.

Falconer Thank you for your stimulating post. You wrote: "Auto-respect is one of the great curses of the human race."
Would you like to develop what you mean? Are auto-respect and self-respect the same.
