Precisely. Instant release from excommunication for use of the confessional to abuse a partner in sexual misconduct (which is one of the most serious offences in church law) followed by an invitation to preach a high-profile series of sermons at the Vatican is cheap grace to put it mildly. BTW I know God gives grace freely and we cannot earn it. I mean by cheap grace the assumption that absolution cancels not merely the sin but the due penance for it, as if the latter was a blank cheque instead of part of the healing process.

I think Father Rupnik had a history of getting blank cheques.

I think someone is a bit hazy on the difference between remitting sin and remitting punishment due for sin.

And that someone is the man often referred to as the Black Pope.

There is an interesting parallel in the ongoing controversy about whether Eric Gill's Stations of the Cross should be removed from Westminster Cathedral, given what is now known about Gill's satyriasis and exploitation of the vulnerable, including his own daughters. www.apollo-magazine.com/eric-gills-fall-from-grace/

Now no doubt Caravaggio was a horrible man, but no one can doubt his artistic genius. While not in the same league, Gill's gift is obvious. But Rupnik is an artistic one trick pony. He has a distinctive style, which is not going to appeal to everyone, but he does the same thing again and again.

I don't like Father Rupnik. If this is true, it's not just a breach of Canon Law, it's a breach of his vow of poverty as a Jesuit: www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=58510#:~:text=Father%20Rupnik%E2%80%94the%20noted%20church,million%20in%20revenues%20for%202022. We can plainly see what he thinks of the vow of chastity. The standard of obedience in the Society of Jesus is at a much higher bar than most orders and a lot higher than the canonical obedience due by secular priests to their bishop. I know he has done a lot of maneuvering to stay within the pale of the Jesuit order, but let's face it, the man has scant regard for the evangelical counsels.

It seems that Fr Rupnik's art is still popular in certain quarters:

I am afraid of how Francis' pontificate is going to be viewed after his death - which I don't believe will be positive at all.

CATHOLIC WORLD REPORT on how much is being brushed under the carpet with Fr Rupnik's expulsion from the Jesuits. (He has been expelled for disobedience, not for the other crimes of which he is accused - and if he is laicised, which is likely if he can't find an order or diocese to take him, he will be outside the authority of ecclesiastical courts.) www.catholicworldreport.com/2023/06/16/in-laffaire-rupnik-optics-matter-too/
