The contrast between Jesus of Nazareth and The Passion of the Christ is interesting in its own right. I don't mean to take from either when I say Zeffirelli was very much in the "Spirit of Vatican II" mode and Gibson was a traditionlist. This is almost stating the obvious.
But the fact is that Jesus of Nazareth came among a number of productions of a similar philosophy. Such as Brother Sun, Sister Moon; Moses: The Lawgiver; and A.D..
I have just recently watched the 1982 Television miniseries Marco Polo which shares much of a cast with these and is another Anglo-Italian production. I know that the brother Nicolo and Matteo Polo arrived back in Europe during the three year sede vacante. The series shows them dealing with Archbishop Theobaldo Visconti in Acre before commencing their journey east, but they are then summoned back as Visconti received news that he was elected Pope (this happened, but there may be dramatic licence here in regard to summoning the Polos back). The new Gregory X is shown as very enlightened, but the Dominican Order are depicted as the Order of the Inquisition. Marco Polo represents openness to other beliefs and cultures. There is a lot of reference. I have to say that the picture of the mediaeval Dominicans here reminded me of the representation of the 17th Century Society of Jesus around the same time in another miniseries set in the Far East, but this one was the much more hostile to the faith, I mean Shogun.
I know I strayed from the point, but I just want to amplify the fact that television is hardly a neutral medium nor is film.

The Chosen has three consultants - an evangelical pastor, a Catholic priest and a rabbi. It's very good on the Jewish context. But it's missing the perspective of the Fathers of the Church, so it would really benefit taking on an Orthodox priest as a consultant.
