A few thoughts on the current election results, which will turn Leinster House into something resembling a lunatic asylum. The election of individual TDs will do very little to restrain Molochianity at this stage, but I was glad to see Peadar Toibin,Carol Nolan and Peter Fitzpatrick rewarded for their integrity. I was sorry to see the defeat of Billy Timmons in Wicklow, of John Waters in Dun Laoghaire (though IMHO he could choose his company better) and of the other Aontu candidates, though their performance in Cavan-Monaghan was good for a first time. I was not in the least sorry to see Justin Barrett's so-called National Party routed. Low as our nation has sunk, it hasn't sunk that low. Sinn Fein and the far left, no doubt, will soon show how far it has sunk. Pray for the country. We'll need it.

The late Monsignor Cremin used to quote the Scottish convert, Hamish Fraser, who believed Ireland would lose her reason if she lost the faith. The election results this time confirm this, if it was not apparent already. Good to see the 15 consistent pro-lifers reelected, but there will be more than enough to replace the strident pro aborts who are gone. And there will be more than enough other mania in the nee Dáil too.

Remember how we are all supposed to be more tolerant and pluralist to people who hold different points of view, now that we have abandoned BAd Old Ireland for Brave New Ireland? The Twitter response to Ronan Mullen's re-election to the Seanad suggests otherwise. Quelle Surprise! gript.ie/mullen-win-seanad/
