Desirably, a future Archbishop of Cashel and Emly should be a priest of the diocese (Bishop Lee of Waterford is, but is a bit near retirement himself). If this doesn't work, a priest of another diocese or order who is native of the Cashel diocese. The trouble is these are all thin on the ground - in any diocese. If Archbishop Martin of Dublin comments about candidates for the priesthood are to be taken seriously, they are definitely and certainly true in the case of the episcopate.
If there were good men available in the Kerry diocese, there would be no reason why one should not be made Archbishop of Cashel or anywhere else. But at present, it is doubtful that there is a priest from Kerry available for the Kerry diocese - I hope I'm wrong. But there was one instance in recent decades where a priest of the Limerick diocese was taken over an available Kerry candidate with disastrous consequences.

Alaisdir I was being facetious with regard to a new archbishop being from Kerry Our current one - thankfully will have to retire within the next year or two enjoys and likes the trappings of wealth. I am sure there are plenty of priests in the archdiocese who would love the job, some could even be good and others would be utterly disastrous. We will just have to wait and see. As a long suffering Limerick person whose parish is in this Tipperary diocese - and having been to Lourdes with the diocesan pilgrimage, us Limerick people ( whose parishes are in the more salubrious end of the diocese) have to suffer the ignominy of having to listen to Tipperary people gloat when or if they beat Limerick in a hurling match.

I might add that my parish in Co. Limerick has two priests who come from Co. Tipperary and both have a penchant for discussing sport on the altar, especially at the expense of Limerick, I admit it does bug me, the pitch is for sport but the altar/church is for the worship and glory of God.

Might be a case of better the devil you know. About 8 dioceses are vacant or in caretaker hands at present and more, Armagh as well as Cashel, will soon be vacant. It may be that the Congregation of Bishops can see no worthy candidates for the episcopacy in Ireland. One thing is clear - they don't want more of the same.

Dermot Clifford it seems will no longer be confirming children and to all intents and purposes is retired which is good news.

Lean, this discussion is about the provision of the EF Mass in Cashel and Emly, not a general debate about the diocese. If there is a particular problem with Archbishop Clifford, you ought to outline it elsewhere in the forum. Whereas I would not be an ardent admirer of the man, as an outsider I don't see that he is any worse than any other serving Irish bishop at the moment. Unfortunately, this isn't saying a lot. BTW, who do you think will replace him?

Father John O'Rourke died in July last year and the monthly Mass in Glengoole-Gortnahoe has not been revived.
