Clonfert is the smallest diocese in Ireland. It has slightly over 35,000 Catholics served by 72 priests in 24 parishes. The high number of priests is accounted for by a few religious houses in the diocese. The diocese's territory is largely in east Galway but includes parts of Roscommon and Offaly. Its official website is: homepage.eircom.net/~clonfert/. When the papal indult Quattuor Abhinc Annos came into force in 1984, Mgr Joseph Cassidy had been Bishop of Clonfert since 1982 and he was Co-adjutor Bishop of Clonfert between 1979 and 1982. In 1987, he became Archbishop of Tuam and was succeeded as Bishop of Clonfert by Mgr John Kirby, hitherto President of the Diocesan College at Garbally. Since 25 March 2008, Clonfert has been unique among all 26 dioceses in Ireland. It is the only one which has never made any provision for the celebration of the extraordinary form of the Roman Mass. Annectdotal evidence suggests Bishop Kirby received petitions negatively and has even resisted the idea of bringing elements of Latin into the vernacular Ordinary Form Mass.

Still at the bottom of the league. Any chance of a change in that?

No. John Kirby is comfortable on the bottom of the TLM league table.

Any change in Clonfert? Still the one no-go diocese for trads?

Has Clonfert arrived at 2010 or is it still stuck at 1969?

According to the IRISH TIMES of Friday 5 June 2011, Bishop Kirby was the only bishop to attend "in a personal capacity" the recent meeting of the Association of Catholic Priests of Ireland which complained about the adoption of the new missal. Mongst other things, the meeting passed a resolution (unanimously) according to the IRISH TIMES complaining that while "generous provision had been made for the Latin Mass" no such concession had been made for the "much larger numbers of priests and laity" who shared their concern about the new translation. Did Bishop Kirby abstain, or does the state of affairs listed on this thread actually constitute his idea of "generous provision"? If so, may the ACPI receive equal generosity.

I have heard rumours that the state of affairs in the Clonfert diocese might change. Watch this space.

Peadar Laighleis' latest entry on the LMSI page on Facebook page:
1st EF Latin Mass in Clonfert Diocese: Mass will take place in St Brendan's Cathedral, Loughrea, Co Galway on Saturday, 6 August, Feast of the Transfiguration at 2.30 pm. The celebrant will be Rev John Loftus CC. This brings to zero the number of Irish dioceses who have not allowed the EF Mass since Blessed John Paul II's indult Quattuor Abhinc Annos. All credit to John Heneghan for his work on this.

THis is very good news. I will try to get down to Loughrea on 6 August - St Brendan's Cathedral is supposed to be an architectural gem and I have long wanted to see it, so this might be a good opportunity. Pity it clashes with the First Saturday Mass in New Mellifont, which I've also been meaning to attend for a while - but beidh la eile ar an bPaorach.

I was at the Mass in Loughrea today; 25-30 present. They had it at one of the side altars (the Sacred Heart). This was the first EF Mass I've attended where the priest says the secret prayers audibly (though still under his breath). The church is a handsome Gothic building, but the artwork (the stained glass in particular) is truly remarkable. Everyone should see it if they have the chance - a little gem.

Another EF/TLM in St Brendan's Cathedral -at 2 pm on Saturday 18 August. Your support would be appreciated, and you will have a chance to see some of the finest Celtic Revival stained glass in the country as well as the liturgical museum, recently highlighted in the CATHOLIC VOICE.
