I picked up a leaflet at church yesterday from The Sanctuary. www.sanctuary.ie/index.html
For those who are not aware it is a sort of centre for holistic healing set up by Sr. Stansilus Kennedy srstan.ie/
For the name is sports and the fact that a nun set there is absolutely nothing to do with Catholicism here. There's a shocking amount of yoga, hatha yoga, somata, satyanada and qi gong and Sr. Stan herself is running a workshop called The Art of Being Still "...the opportunity to try different meditation practices which combine the wisdom of both Eastern and Western traditions."
There is no Adoration Chapel, no spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius, no mention of the Rosary (the repetitive nature of the prayer has the effect of meditation), no exploration of the mystics in our own Church. Instead yoga and its ilk pushes people inside themselves, trance like, in search of stillness instead of awakening them to the presence of God and allowing Him to still their hearts and gain peace. It's really disappointing to see a nun ignore the treasures of her own Church and embrace a poor substitute of another.
Yoga is dangerous, I know people think I'm nuts when I state this but it really is. Fr. Mitch Pacwa has written and spoken about it and here is a piece about it; www.catholicassociates.com/leaflets/Yoga%20Spiritual%20Health%20Warning_Rev1.pdf
I'm waiting for this book on order, www.ignatiusproductions.org/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=IP&Product_Code=6358&Category_Code=BOOKS and will report back on what he has to say. Yoga is the go-to activity for the stressed, so I think it might be a good idea to have some knowledge for our practicing Catholic brethren who want to do it.
