Given that I have been scathing about some of the pro-abortion films shown at the Irish Film Centre in the recent past, I think I should mention that they will be showing a rerelease of Louis Malle's film AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS from 30 January. Malle's film is based on his wartime memories of how the Carmelite headmaster at his boarding school hid some Jewish boys among the pupils, and was deported to his death (along with the boys he tried to save) when he was betrayed. Malle was not a believer, and my understanding is (I haven't seen the film myself) that neither the priest nor the Church is portrayed as flawless, but that this makes its overall testimony all the more impressive. Worth pencilling into your diary, if you can take this chance to see it on the big screen.

We watched that in secondary school as part of French class. It's an excellent film, well worth watching. I can't remember exactly what the treatment of religion in it was like though.

It seems that the Bible Society of Ireland shop in Dawson Street is closing down - at least it has never seemed to be open when I passed it lately, and they have now got a notice in their window saying they are having a clearance sale on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th May. They used to stock some good Catholic titles, so it may be worth while taking a look in on the sale.

Also, the National Gallery of Ireland has a small exhibition on Baroque portrayals of saints, which is on until 31 May. Well worth a visit, some very interesting material linking it to JEsuit spirituality. There is also some discussion of how Counter-Reformation Jesuits tried to discourage portrayal of purely legendary scenes and pioneered modern hagiography in order to sift the chaff from the wheat. So Fr Thurston was in a long tradition, and the advocacy of total credulity in relation to saints' legends which I have come across in some nineteenth-century writers was one of the less fortunate byproducts of the nineteenth-century Gothic Revival.

The next Belloc Society meeting is on Saturday at 1. I though I may as well notify people here, just in case people who don't know about it but might be interested happen to be browsing.

And our Chesterton Society is meeting an hour before, in the same place, to discuss the future direction of the Society. Be there or be polygonal.

The next meeting of the G.K. Chesterton Society will be on Saturday the eleventh of July, at twelve, in the Central Catholic Library as before. The last meeting went well and we hope to have more regular meetings from now on. We are going to start reading through Chesterton's books and we have decided to start with 'Heretics', so we're asking people to read the first three chapters (Chesterton's chapters are very short) for the next meeting. But if you don't manage to do that, just come anyway.
It's easily available online, if you can't find a paper copy.

All Ireland Rally for Life Saturday 4 July 2015, assembling Parnell Square for 2pm and going through city centre (I'm not sure whether it concludes in Merrion Square or outside LEinster House. Just a note - the bootboy brigade of the "pro-choicers" usually assemble on the traffic island in O'Connell Street, usually opposite Clery's and sometimes on both sides of the road, chanting hateful slogans and waving placards suggesting that pro-lifers oppose abortion because we want to keep up the supply of children to be abused by priests. DON'T BE PROVOKED! THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT! I hope the stewarding is effective. rallyforlife.net/
