Yes, I think a Saturday would have been better. What do you think yourself?
Did you attend?
The photo op man is the one responsible for his choice of dress, the organisers can hardly be held responsible for him. One person there tweeted that a photographer crossed through crowds of people to get to one lady with a holy picture.
Why are you calling it a shambles? We don't know what effect, if any, it has had yet.

I don't really go in for 'ah sure it'll do rightly' or conceding before you start.
Why do all lessons on the Pro Life side always have to be learned the hard way ? I feel it was another squandered opportunity.
How does a working person living on the other side of Ireland get themselves and their family to a 4.30pm protest in Dublin on a Tuesday evening in December ?
The organisers of a large event can and should have proper marshaling of their events, what if something even more untoward had occurred as the world watches ?
Along with some proper conviction and effort from the Bishops and the pulpit (and a demand for same from Pro Life), it would be more than feasible for a well organised one day event to achieve an average attendance of 100 people per parish, that's only two coach loads of all ages. An attendance of 100-200,000 would have been very achievable.
The positive aspects were that the majority of spokespersons were women, and the majority of placards and signage were professional and well thought out, along with the candle lights.
I commend anyone who was able to attend.

I couldn't go for family reasons. The photographer looking for the holy picture was presumably the one who took the photo appearing in the IRISH TIMES today, which features a large placard with Our Lady of Guadalupe. I agree the time was badly chosen but there seems to have been a good turnout nonetheless. I was worried the pro-aborts would seize on a small turnout. According to the IRISH TIMES the organisers said there were 10,000, while Gardai said the figure was "nearer 5000" - which could be anything from 5001 to 7499. The presence of several bishops was also a good sign - as Mark Shea puts it, episcopal spine alert! The dark side will of course treat any pro-life demo at all as "intimidation", while their own accusations of murder, barbarism, disgracing the country in view of the world etc, will be treated as fair comment.

I was so pleased that I went to the Unite4life vigil at the Dail last Tuesday. Thanks to this forum for alerting me.
The purpose of the vigil was to let the government know that the people of Ireland are against abortion and like Louise, I was impressed by the dignity and sincerity of the meeting. We were there to remind Enda and others of their promises not to bring in abortion. There are only a few days when all members of the Dail are in attendance and last Tuesday was one of these. We called out to them from outside the Dail and we were heard. Heads appeared at windows and then they appeared at tthe plinth. There would have been no point in going to an empty building. We were there to deliver our message to our elected representatives so they needed to hear from us not those who purported to speak for us. It was historic in that it was organized by all the pro-life groups in the country united as one. If you want to join with them, text your name and number to Kate at the number given in the original notice.
Next Sunday there is a vigil in Derry and there is another on Saturday 22 in Belfast.

Just back from listening to John Waters talk about how our culture has blocked out any reference to transcendance or the Absolute at an Iona Institute event at the Davenport Hotel. Full house.
A skeptic society was having a meeting in the neighbouring conference room. Mr. Waters said rather wittily, "Maybe we're the real sceptics". He is a very fluent talker and I often think how lucky we are to have someone like John Waters, who doesn't fit the stereotype of an Irish Catholic and who can challenge the culture's presumptions.
I keep hoping Fintan O'Toole or Vincent Browne will have a Road to Damascus experience.

I've seen January 19th mentioned as a date for the next pro life vigil but it seems unconfirmed as yet. Anyway, it's a Saturday so that would solve a few problems. I'll edit this when I get confirmation. If anyone else has more details for it please let us know.
Edit; I think it may be at 4.30pm at Merrion Square but it is yet to be confirmed, all the groups are working together to sort it out.

It has been confirmed that the Vigil for Life will take place at 4.30pm on Saturday January 19th on Merrion Square. Please ask the priests in any and every church you attend to announce it from the pulpit, it is vital that thousands attend this one. If you are on FB or Twitter spread the word there too.

I believe that there is a prayer meeting starting at 5pm this evening in Dominic St Church Dublin following with Mass at 6pm and concluding prayers following which there will be a talk by Ivan from Medjugorje. Those based in Dublin city centre might make it.

Will do, but really, what is the aim here ? Louise are you involved with the Pro Life organisers ? Sorry, Louise this is not directed at you personally at all, but this issue is far too important for any more half-arsed efforts. Maybe you could bring this view back to the organisers if you are involved. Yet another small protest of 4-5,000 people that barely gets reported on that evenings news ? That's been tried and failed. In fact if anything these small turnouts are almost giving the politicians the idea that its ok to proceed with pro choice policy. - Just a few extremists showed up again. Have any lessons been learned yet ? Surely the organisers should be jointly liaising with the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference, and leaders of all the other Christian Churches in Ireland, agreeing the time and date, and contacting each and every parish in Ireland to to provide a min. of two coach loads from every parish in Ireland ? - That's very achievable with a bit of effort and encouragement. 100,000 people is a number the media and politicians will pay interest to. Also with regard to marshaling, have any lessons been learned yet ? It should be made clear in advance that this should be a Pro-Life demo open to everyone with a Pro-Life outloook, from Catholic to Atheist, and not seen as a religious pilgrimage / Catholic protest. (e.g. last time, Men dressed in KKK style gowns dragging giant crosses etc.)

Protests are one thing, but lobbying of TDs is essential. FG has to be the main target for pressure on this score. It must be unrelenting but yet courteous and professional. Everyone should include their full name and contact details in ever communication and ring and make appointments to see their TDs. Everyone should be explicit in a declared determination not to vote for FG at the next election or even to give them a preference, if this goes through. Forget about Labour or any of the other parties - any effort in those areas is wasted and time and resources are precious. Everything must be concentrated on Fine Gael.

The last demonstration was called at fairly short notice; presumably the hope is that this one will be a good deal bigger as there has been more time to prepare. Some attention to FF as well as FG may be useful, as FF will be hesitating about their position on this (they will want to embarrass FG but also to appeal to liberal middle-class voters in Dublin). If FF oppose legislation that will put more pressure on FG as it will give us an alternative to vote for (however unsatisfactory). The notices say "placards will be supplied" presumably to cut down on the more flamboyant types; unfortunately I am not sure how people can be prevented from bringing along/displaying their own. I agree this should not be presented as a "Catholic" event. Future discussion about tactics should be on one of the pro-life threads; this thread is primarily for announcing events, not discussing how they should be run
