Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Desmond Cardinal Connell. This is not to defend (or to criticise) anything he did or didn't do, simply a reminder that we should pray for him as for any departed soul (especially since I believe he did not have many close relatives, who might be expected to be most likely to pray for him). He used to visit an elderly relative of mine, whom I knew only slightly and who is now long dead, when he was on the staff of UCD. He was kind to her and she was fond of him. Requiescat in pace.

Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Peter Matthews, former TD for Dublin South (FG then Independent) who has died. He was the first TD to speak out against the miscalled Protection of Life in Pregnancy Act, and put conscience before party. He thought that because he knew what he was talking about he should contribute to financial debates in the Dail, where in fact the speaking arrangements are stitched up by the party whips. For this he got sneered at by certain Dail sketchwriters in newspapers who can only snark. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOrdVXlgTjs

Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Eamon Casey, former bishop of Galway, who died recently. His sins, and the damage they did to the church, are public knowledge; remember that many of us - certainly myself - would be embarrassed if our sins of thought, word and omission were made public. Our Lord came to save sinners. The good works Bishop Casey did, for the homeless and emigrants in London and in speaking out against oppression in Central America and elsewhere, are also public knowledge. I feel particularly strongly about the latter because in the 80s I tended to see everything through a Cold War perspective and this meant I didn't perceive how many of his condemnations of that oppression were absolutely iustified. Leave him to Heaven. Blessed Oscar Romero pray for him, and for those of us who have been like the soldiers of Coroticus.

Please pray for the repose of the souls of all the victims of the Manchester bombing last night. 22 people dead and more than 50 injured are the figures so far.

Lord have mercy, I hope we can include the victims of war and malnutrition in Yemen in our prayers. I watched a Channel Four (UK) Unreported World documentary about the devastation in that country - it is littered with the graves of children who have died because of lack of food and the diseases caused by it. It was the most upsetting thing to watch, small souls fighting for breath for want of bread and water. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on us.

I suggest prayers for our Taoiseach-elect, Leo Varadkar, as he takes up his responsibilities. To say he doesn't fill me with excitement is a considerable understatement, but we should still pray for someone to whom the well-being of the country is entrusted.

Liam Cosgrave has just died at the age of 97. Many of us will not have agreed with all his policies, but he was a man who deserved respect. May perpetual light shine upon him.
