Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Fr Sean Fagan SM, who has died. This request does not, of course, imply endorsement of his opinions.

I'd also like to mention Fr. Padraig Ó Fiannachta, tranalator of the Bible into Irish and prodigious scholar. His death was announced in the Irish language Mass in Glasnevin on Sunday; much to my surprise, since I happen to be reading a book about him, and I only heard about him very recently.

I would like to request prayers for me, please. Some times when I'm praying I feel like what I'm saying is being sent out into a big empty space. I sometimes wonder whether my prayers feel like that because I have lost too much grace, or if it's because I'm having a "dark night".

I sometimes wonder whether my prayers feel like that because I have lost too much grace, or if it's because I'm having a "dark night". Will pray for you. Don't worry, perhaps God is testing your faith by appearing to be remote (though He is certainly not, don't get me wrong) so that you will draw closer to Him. I have had a similar experience myself, where simply praying can take a lot of effort and willpower, so you're certainly not the only one.

Praying for you, Antaine, and I feel pretty certain you are experiencing a 'dark night of the soul'. So many saints have gone through the very same experience.
From my own life, I can say that the times when God felt most absent were, looking back, times of great grace when (I believe) God was showing me something I would not have seen otherwise. That poem "Footprints" may be corny but I think it expresses a truth.
Remember that to try to pray is to pray-- the Catechism itself says so.

Will pray for you, Antaine. It's a grim experience but we must trust in God.

Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Nat Hentoff, iazz critic, civil liberties activist, and one of the most prominent pro-life atheists in America. He upheld the right to life despite criticism even from friends and family. Amen, I say unto you, even as you do to the least of my little ones, you do unto me www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/nat-hentoff-zl/
