I was in Dublin at the weekend at went to the Latin Mass (now called the Extradordinary Form of the Mass since Pope Benedict's motu proprio Summorum Pontificum) in Harrington Street at 10:30. It is so beautiful that it is hard to see why anyone would want to be anywhere else. Archbishop Martin has now established a chaplaincy for the tradtional Mass, with daily and Sunday Mass in Harrington Street, and the monthly bulletin for December is at www.faithapostolate.ie/Dublin_Chaplaincy_December_2007.pdf.

The procession went well, but for one problem. The clergy had no loudhailer or megaphone, making the rosary and hymns impossible to hear.
It also brought out the fact that the chaplaincy is not a parish, and is unlikely to assume parochial character anytime soon - no band, no scout/girl guide unit and certainly no Defence Force contingent accompanying the procession as happens elsewhere.
Of course the procession happened on Sunday and not the Thursday which is another bone of contention.

Is this another matter for the 'diocese by diocese' list?

I wasn't at it but I can understand her reactions.
I was abroad on Sunday and had to attend a Mass in the Ordinary Form — which was conducted, in fairness, in careful observance of the rubrics. The altar rails have been removed in the church and people stand and almost all receive in the hand. However when I advanced to the altar steps I knelt to receive on the tongue. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a woman in her forties, who had been standing, do the same. I'd like to think I was able to encourage her to do something that she had wanted to do but was inhibited about. I used to be a bit hesitant myself but I've got over that. The Pope's clearly expressed preferences were a strong encouragement to me.

Once again, this is off point. What has Kerala to do with Dublin?

I preferred St. Audoen's to St. Kevin's myself - a nice well-proportioned neoclassical building. (John Henry Newman actually considred it as a possible location for a Dublin Oratory. A pity that didn't come off -Oratorians in Dublin would have been very handy.) St. Kevin's is a bit squat in my opinion - nave too short in proportion to the transept. The stained glass windows are a pretty mixed bag (though the ones behind the altar are fine. I miss having real candles rather than the button-operated electric type.

St Audoen's was also in a better location with better facilities. It had toilets which were accessible (important for elderly/young families/people travelling distances - that covers most of the congregation) which St Kevin's doesn't have. Parking was easier at St Audoen's. From the traveller's point of view, or those who like to have a discussion after Mass off church premises, there were any number of cafés and restaurants visible from St Audoen's. The weekday Mass in St Kevin's is not well attended as it is in a section of Dublin which is not the most convenient to get to - this matter would have arisen had weekday Mass been available in St Audoen's, even at 8 am. So, it could be argued that the Dublin trad community lost rather than gained by the move.

Summorum Pontificum allows for an old rite parish. Why not erect one? They should have their own Church dedicated exclusively to the old rite.
