Do the foyers de charité still run the week-long silent retreats in Ireland? Has anyone any experience of, or heard any views from people who have been on recent ones? A friend of mine went on one years ago and spoke very highly of it. Other than that I know little about them.

Do the foyers de charité still run the week-long silent retreats in Ireland? Has anyone any experience of, or heard any views from people who have been on recent ones? A friend of mine went on one years ago and spoke very highly of it. Other than that I know little about them. I think one of the great tragedies is that not only the Foyers de Charité, but very many of the organisations we are talking about do great things, but their name is totally destroyed by what could be the actions of one individual. I know the Spiritual Family of the Work of Christ is an Austrian headquartered community. Bishop Philip Boyce OCD new their foundress while he was with his order in Rome and then brought some of the sisters to Letterkenny when he became Bishop of Raphoe. He couldn't speak highly enough about them. Yet one sister, one who as it happens had been briefly stationed in Letterkenny, left and published a book about being repeatedly raped by a priest of this order. The priest's defence is that the relationship they had was consented - which should still leave him open to sanction for breaking his vow of chastity, but he hasn't been. Now, let me be clear that I would not want to take from the good achieved by this group by the evil done by one of its members. I find with L'Arche that this is even worse - when I was younger, Jean Vannier was presented as a living saint and I know how much he did on behalf of intellectually impaired people, especially at this time where eugenics is actively promoted (even if that's not what they call it). But Vannier's behaviour casts a whole shadow over L'Arche. I know his inspiration came from Pere Philippe and the Community of St John, about whom much the same can be said. If I was to mention the Legion of Christ - I know lots of people who know Legionaries whom they swear by, but Marciel Maciel destroys that. My point here is that we shouldn't lose sight of the big picture. Whatever scandals are associated with these groups should never take from the good they have done.
