Personally, I believe that Mrs Christina Gallagher is not a genuine visionary and that Father Gerard McGinnity is behaving very irresponsibly in his capacity as her spiritual director. I have read some very disturbing things about the House of Prayer on Achill Island in various media.
What do forum members think?

It's going to be hard to slight Fr McGinnity - given the standoff with former Msgr Ledwith, he is seen as a hero of sorts in many circles.

That may well be, but Father McGinnity has talked many vulnerable elderly people in donating substantial life savings to the House of Prayer, with the assurance 'Our Lady will look after them'. One does not have to an extreme cynic to ask why Our Lady would not look after the House of Prayer instead.

It seems to me that in the 19th and early 20th centuries, being a visionary meant a life of prayer and penance followed. But now, nothing of the sort. In fact Christina Gallagher, like the Medjugorje 'seers' have hit the jackpot.
But Christina isn't respectable. A lot of poor old dears parted with a lot of money on her behalf.

House of Prayer to be investigated for fraud Colin Coyle
The house of prayer on Achill Island, the retreat centre founded by Christina Gallagher, the self-styled Marian Visionary, is the subject of a Garda investigation into four allegations of fraud.
Westport Garda station confirmed yesterday that an inquiry into the activities of Gallagher and her associates has begun.
A number of disaffected former devotees of Gallagher have complained publicly about the fundraising tactics employed by Gallagher and the role of her spiritual director, Father Gerard McGinnity, a parish priest in Co. Louth. Some claim to have been pressured into handing over five- and six- figure sums at a series of secret meetings held in nursing homes.
At a meeting in Multyfarnham, Co. Westmeath in 2005, followers were allegedly told an apocalypse was imminent unless €2m was raised for "a secret project that Our Lady had asked for that would save millions of souls". One elderly lady, who made a formal statement to Gardai in Co. Mayo earlier this month, said "we believe that our money was used to fund Christina Gallagher's lifestyle. We are hoping that more people will come forward now to tell their stories."
Earlier this year, The Sunday Times revealed that the Revenue Commissioners, which stripped the House of Prayer of its charitable tax status in 2006, was conducting its own inquiry.
Disillusioned followers provided tax officials with copies of cheques for five-figure sums made out to companies and bank accounts controlled by Gallagher and her associates.
The sums were supposed to be used to build more houses of prayer in Munster, Leinster, and Ulster, but the retreat centres never materialised.
In recent weeks, a number of former patrons have asked Gallagher to document how their donations were spent, but detailed financial information has not been forthcoming.
Our Lady Queen of Peace House of Prayer (Achill) Ltd., the company that controls the Achill retreat, recently filed its annual return for the year ended March 2006. Although it made an operating loss of €159,562 for the year, the company had accumulated profits of €2,128,592.
The Garda investigation will increase pressure on Cardinal Sean Brady to censure McGinnity, Gallagher's chief advisor. The priest defended Gallagher on RTÉ's Liveline earlier this year, when it emerged she was living in a €4m mansion in Malahide, owned by another prominent House of Prayer fundraiser.
Gallagher's personal wealth is likely to come under scrutiny in the police investigation. Although she has no recognisable source of income, she is the registered owner of a house in Newport, Co. Mayo, and joint owner of a property in Knockmore, also in Mayo. She also bought a €1m property outside Ballina in 2006.

I have to say, there is a lot in Falconer's last post. I didn't see the Sunday Times piece he cites, but it follows the story I read in the Sunday Tribune and other media. This is a story that cuts a lot of different ways. For traditional Catholics, the association between St Patrick's Academy, Islandeady and the HofP is an albatross - threatening the continued existence of a place into which many trads sunk huge resources. The role of Fr McGinnity is another. Quite a number of people regard him as a hero, given his role as a 'whistle blower' in the case of Mons Ledwith in Maynooth (which I will address if the thread on sex abuse by clerics continue). This is a hollow accolade, but I have tried unsuccessfully to get that through to many people. Anyway, the Tribune piece detailed how Fr McGinnity cajoled vulnerable old people into parting with life savings. The whole thing resembles a cult.

She completely "forgot" our Lord Words : And he said to his disciples: 22 Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat; nor for your body, what you shall put on. 23 The life is more than the meat, and the body is more than the raiment. 24 Consider the ravens, for they sow not, neither do they reap, neither have they storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much are you more valuable than they? 25 And which of you, by taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit? 26 If then ye be not able to do so much as the least thing, why are you solicitous for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. But I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these. 28 Now if God clothe in this manner the grass that is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more you, O ye of little faith? 29 And seek not you what you shall eat, or what you shall drink: and be not lifted up on high. 30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek. But your Father knoweth that you have need of these things. 31 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you. 32 Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom.
33 Sell what you possess and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which faileth not: where no thief approacheth, nor moth corrupteth. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Luc, Translation Douay Rheims. Miss Gallagher's behavior, in total contradiction with Jesus' Words, and holiness, are the prove she is not a "visionary" and basicaly not even a Christian. This has to stop immediatly.

Have any of you read the 5-page article about Christina Gallagher on today's Sunday World paper? I saw what was written in Jan. and I heard that Christina was going to sue this paper, but now I see that this paper is not afraid of being sued, and she hasn't done anything about sueing.
