I don't mean to engage in conspiracy theories here, only to draw lines from demonstrable facts.
I note that the new Superior General of the Society of St Columban is Father Tim Mulroy from Swinford, Co Mayo. I know him and he is a nice guy. He was a national teacher before he joined the Columbans and he was in the same year in St Patrick's College, Drumcondra as Father John Hennebry, a Waterford man who is the Provincial of the Irish Augustinian province. He is also a nice guy.
What the two men have in common is three years exposure to the teaching of the late Anne Louise Gilligan in Pat's before either went near a seminary. A lot of primary teachers became priests around the same time, though few rose this high. Phonsie Cullinane was also a national teacher before going to Maynooth, but he was through Mary Immaculate College in Limerick.
Major religious superiors are like departmental secretaries, invisible but highly influential. We ought also consider the influences on them.

What we are talking about is prosopography, or Namierism, or network analysis - tracing possible influences on people through their contacts, not presenting these as some conscious conspiracy. This is a legitimate exercise if its limitations are borne in mind (my two postgraduate supervisors are an agnostic and an atheist and I respect them greatly, but that aspect of them hasn't "rubbed off" on me).

Perhaps "shared influences" might be a better title - this is only my suggestion.
