Today I suddenly felt in the mood to read some short stories. Does anyone here have any recommendations? Please understand I'm interested in 'yarns' and not modernist vignettes/character sketches/prose poems etc. I mean authors more than particular stories, though both are welcome.
They don't have to be Catholic in theme, of course.

They don't have to be Catholic in theme, of course. Maupassant's short stories are entertaining and easy on the eye and good yarns Leon Bloy's 'Disagreeable Tales' are short and mischievous. Edgar Allan Poe's short stories are worth a read if you like the supernatural or detective genre. Conan Doyle's short stories/novellas are quite escapist and old fashioned tales. Jorge Luis Borges 'Labyrinths' is a collection of short stories which are written in his erudite fashion but often have a twist or turn at the end. Lord Dunsany may be worth a read, one of his stories 'The Electric King' is quite interesting.
