In view of the horrific implications of RTE's slandering of Fr. Kevin Reynold's, one would have expected a media onslaught similar to their ( pseudo ? ) outrage over the Cloyne report. However, by comparison, the reaction from the Fourth Estate, has been virtually non-existent. Talk about closing ranks, & circling the wagon !. The Church could learn a lot from the media in this regard. But really, the non-reaction merely confirm's what most of us have known all along - the media does'nt give a damn about child abuse. One hope's that the Bishop's etc., will fight their corner a bit more aggressivly in future, when confronted by more media pseudo-outrage !.

As I pointed out in the thread on the ACP, it was the ACP rather than the church authorities which gave Fr Reynolds the legal assistance needed to fight his corner. I am sorry to say that some trad bloggers in the US have started attacking him for being associated with the ACP (he spoke at their recent AGM on his experiences) but what is he expected to do under the circumstances? I have no brief whatsoever for the ACP (see the ACP thread if you doubt me) but one legit issue they have picked up on is that the church authorities have gone from their former position of covering up accusations to the other extreme - treating accusations virtually as proof of guilt and leaving accused priests to defend themselves with little or no support. (Obviously we ought not to have the situation which has been reported from certain American dioceses in former decades, where victims were forced into settlements by the threat of dioceses using legal tactics to make them exhaust their resources on legal costs - but neither should there be a situation where a priest who denies the accusation is cut adrift and left to defend himseelf on his own while under a presumption of guilt.) RTE certainly did act very unprofessionally - given that Fr Reynolds had agreed to take a paternity test, the programme could have been delayed until the test results were available, and then they wouldn't have got into this mess. THis statement on the ACP website very correctly asks whether RTE, which has been demanding accountability and transparency from the church authorities, will practice the same by revealing which executives were responsible for this decision and holding them to account. It also notes that Alan Shatter issued a statement when the programme came out in which he spoke as if the allegations made in it were proven beyond doubt, and One in Four made a statement which implied that all denials by those accused of abuse must necessarily be false. www.associationofcatholicpriests.ie/2011/10/questions-on-rte-apology-case/

Absolutely correct. This story has totally undermined the credibility of not only RTE, but the Government ( presumably Inda will make an impassioned Dail speech on this outrage ! ) & One in Four. Hypocrites, one & all.
